California Diesel

Okay, for all you MOCers out here on the west side of this great country, explain the diesel situation to me. Came over from Phoenix today and are staying outside of Barstow on our trip to Seattle. I have diesel prices in this area from 3.89 to 4.89 per gallon. I did take on 10 gallons of B20 diesel just before we checked into CG today. Is that the huge price difference, between regular diesel, B15, and B20? Also, it looks like Loves Truck Stops have B15, does Pilot and Flying-J have the same blend?

JandC,
Diesel prices will vary about as you have already noticed. We filled up in Bakersfield at $3.96 all regular diesel. Filled up again at Lodi at a FJ and it was same as in Bakersfield. It, however, was B20 diesel. First time I've seen that at FJ. We're in Shasta now and the price is about the same. I haven't noticed if it is also B20. Will find out tomorrow when I fill up again. Happy Travels, HamRad

According to the California Air Resources Board (CARB). the folk who set all kinds of fuel and air standards in CA, there are only 50 approved biodiesel locations. And they don't get higher than B20. Most of the diesel sold in CA is pure dino derivative diesel. The bio stuff is usually only a few cents lower than regular stuff. http://www.driveclean.ca.gov/Search_.../Biodiesel.php

The price does vary bunch depending on the dealer and location. The price at stations near the major highways is often 10 to 30 cents higher than neighborhood stations. The Gas Buddy app can really help you avoid some of the really overpriced outlets.

The good news is that CA requires a cetane rating of 53 for diesel fuel sold in state (much higher than most other state's who require on 40-45), http://www.arb.ca.gov/enf/fuels/dieselspecs.pdf

if you shop at Ralphs and get over 200 points Shell will sell you diesel or gas at .20 cents off per gallon. if you shop at Vons they do the same at Chevron use gas buddy to find the best deals.

Diesel here on the Coast of Oregon is 3.85 a gallon. Don't know if it's cheaper inland on I-5?

Welcome to the West....Prices in CA some of the highest you will find averaging about $3.99 per gallon. The further north the higher. You will notice a little lower in Oregon because road taxes are not as high. If you are traveling coastal highway expect over $4.00 per gallon. If you are traveling 101 north Willits just north of highway20 will have your cheapest fuel stock up and then just go with the flow....Have a great trip....

Not that it will help where you are now, but local station here west of Portland (OR) is $3.61 a gallon. Shell station on highway 30 is $3.71. And, the ripoff local Chevron on the main drag on highway 26 is $4.09 a gallon.

Not a big difference in Northern Virginia - best I found yesterday was $3.83.

JandC You are in our neck of the Woods(Joshua trees and Cactus Lol) You wont find much difference here in the desert there are a couple good stations about 5 mile east of I-15 on Main Street in Hesperia, That won't help you much you would hard pressed to get into them with the Monty. Now that I look at your post it is probably to late now, I suspect you are somewhere North of Sacramento by now. Hopefully you made through Sacramento before Rush hourand I am Sure you are having a great ride on our wonderful Interstate system. Have a Great trip to Seattle.

Three words of warning:

READ YOUR WARRANTY.

Dodge does not like 20 % bio. Have no idea about other manufacturers.

Don't believe me,

Actually we are going to hang here in Chowchilla until Thursday then cut over to Novato and run up 101 from there. Rt. 99 had some rough spots. So far my first 5 fill ups in California have all had B20. They have all been Pilot, Flying J, or Loves. Tonight I was bobtailing back from dinner and topped off at a Shell station which had #2 Diesel. Mrs. CountyGuy, don't know anything about Dodge, but Ford eats B20 and it doesn't effect warranty issues.

The truck stop at the north end of Fresno, used to be Kleins, has B20 and good price for cash. That Shell station in Chowchilla has always had great prices on diesel, fill up there whenever I'm in the area. Our 2012 Chevy Duramax does well with B20 also, not sure about the older ones.

When I first started through California and started paying this much for French-Fry-Diesel and experienced some less than smooth roads, began to think I should have cut up through Nevada and avoided the state. But then we spent the day in Yosemite! Wow! Worth the drive, the prices, and rough roads!

Hopefully you will be going over to the coast and up the Highway 101 thru the Redwoods!!! It is definitely worth the drive up the coast to Washington.

There are less Flying J's on that route. Enjoy the many landscapes of California!!! The further north you get the less congested it is.

Diesel in San Francisco is anywhere from $4.29 and up. Here for 4 days but the good thing is we are using other transportation to get around, ferries, tour bus, cable car, street cars, etc. We are heading up 101 from here. Want to experience the Redwoods, Oregon coast, and some other places we have heard about. California is expensive there is no doubt about that, but has a lot of sights to see.

You will see some of the best coastline on the west coast going thru Oregon.Honey Bear campground in Gold Beach is right near the beach, an older campground. Lincoln City has a great campground, Premeir overlooking the beach, $45 to $55 per night. Well worth it.

Actually we picked Turtle Rock while in the Gold Beach area, but we are staying at Premier, Lincoln City. Both of them are a little on the high side but we heard, as you said, they are nice with water views.

Prices in southern Ohio and West Virginia are pretty much the same as California at the moment. We paid $4.19 in West Virginia off I 64 on Thursday and $3.44 at a Hess station in Williamsburg, Virginia yesterday, a $.75/gal difference in less than 300 miles.
