Leaking AC unit

Our AC unit started leaking water from the inside of the unit where the filter is. I took a look up inside and it looks like the water is coming from the fin's up inside the unit. It looks like a small radiator from a car. Has anyone had this problem?
Thanks..

I have not seen leaking from that part of the AC and when it's running it leaks water out the side drain vent (it should do that). Condensation will form on those fins but it should be draining to an exterior path.

You might have to check for blockage of the drain or path to the drain. This could require a trip to the roof and some tools to remove the cover check things out.

You can start with that unless you've already done so, but wait for others to reply. I am sure others could have more ideas. Good luck.

Are you running the fan speed on low??? This (on SOME units) has caused the insides/guts of the A/C to freeze up.

Freezes up, melts, rains inside.

Older units, with A/C installed on the slope of the roof, had trouble with certain low profile A/C units.

We did, we thought one of the yorks did not make it outside, we found a puddle pretty much under the A/C unit. Al was beginning the mopping up procedure when the A/C unit peed all over his back. He sure yelped, guess the water was a bit cold??

Checking the drain as suggested is also a good idea.

Just spent a week at TOPSAIL park in Florida. I experienced the same problem on the rear AC unit only. Water was pouring off the front and rear roof areas the whole time we were there so I do not believe the drains were blocked at all. The rear dripped inside a little bit (5 to 10) drips, but not enough to concerm me. However when we shut everything down to leave DW called me inside as she noticed the whole ceiling area at a panel splice towards the rear of the camper was wet and dripping. I pushed up the trim piece at the splice and a considerable amount of water oozed out. I checked it when we got back to our storage unit and the trim piece is sagging a little now. It was quite humid at the campground and every morning the exterior of the camper had a lot of condensation on it. I don't know if that contributed to the problem or maybe I should leave the fans running instead of setting them on auto. Hopefully some other members will reply to the post

Thanks for all the info.. I will start by checking on the roof and make sure there is no blockage up there..When the sun goes down a little.. We are in Evansville, IN.. heading back to TN.. May take a couple of weeks to get there... I run the fan on auto so I do not think it is freezing up.. Will take the whole grill off on the inside and do some more checking.. It does not leak inside when we turn the unit off ... only when it is running... will let you know if I find out why it is leaking..
Thanks again for the info...

I had a similar problem in a M/H awhile back. My rear a/c would leak water down from the air filter. I took the panel off and found that the seal between the a/c and the roof of the M/H was not compressed enough and allowed water to run down the A/C instead of beeing directed off the roof. I tighten the 4 bolts and problem solved.

I think Hugh is probably on the right trail. We are in South TX backed up to the bay. You won't find a more humid place. The only time we get any water at all is if condensation forms on the inner plastic cover of the AC. I think Dometic has some torque specs on their web site for how much to crush the seal between the roof and unit.

I had the problem but a complete different cause and or solution. The unit would condensate like crazy and drip when the down blast grill was closed. Open the grill and it would quit as the down blast would dry out the moister on the grill. The cause is that the grill and filter housing inside the trailer is not insulated and the unit condenses due to the temprature differential between the conditioned air and the inside air. We leave the down blast grill slightly open and no condensation, just way to much noise. It is my opinion that the whole rear air system is mis-designed. Not enough vents to properly circulate and no insulation in the ac plenum. Of course I could be wrong but I do have 20 plus years in the ac trades. I have seen many brands of 5th wheel that approach the ac system like it matters rather than an after thought and they do not have these problems and have much better air flow.

I think Carol has this one pegged. I too had the drip, drip inside my unit yesterday...was running my fan in Auto which just allows it to go "off" when temperature has been achieved. There is a second switch...which is fan speed Hi/Lo...I was running mine on Lo to allow me to watch TV without cranking up the volume. I checked on roof and the pan was full of water, running off the roof and all that stuff. I turned the fan speed switch to Hi and today....same hot and humid condition but no drips inside and no liquid in pan on roof. My Brother-in-law who is traveling with us in SOB (Heating/AC Business Owner) suggested it has to do with there being too high static pressure with this duct design/unit causes the coil to freeze up...only way to make it better is move the air faster...
So its better to be deaf, cool and dry...

noneck,

When you had the fan speed on auto did you have the drip? I was thinking when it is really humid that maybe I should set the fan on high and leave it on and let the compressor cycle on and off. I had mine on auto all the time this past week and the drip only seemed to happen when the unit cycled off.

druryg, I left it on Auto, maybe in higher humid conditions leaving in the "On" is necessary to clear the icing on the off-cycle of the compressor.

Mine will do that if I close the fins on the cover to try and force more air through the ducts.

garyka, I keep that vent (at unit) closed all the time to push air to extremes...

Ihave a carrier low pro in the front - it started leaking onto bed the problem turned out that the filter screens were clogged with lint from the bedroom -- slid out the filters and cleaned and now it works great
