another rear stabilizer question

After reading the responses on the rear stabilizer question, it made us think of another question. Our unit is winterized, slides in. We always leave the rear stabilizers down at all times. Is that wrong ?

Bonscott:
I used to do exactly the same.
Then, a couple years ago, I had a serious mouse problem in the rig.
Over a period of about a year I did a bunch of things to no avail.
Used traps and caught quite a few mice. Still had a problem.
Used mouse baits. They took the baits and I still had a problem.
Put those electronic rodent repellers in the rig. Still had a problem.
Sealed every opening under the rig that I could see. Still had a problem.
But while I was rolling around under the rig I realized that
the rear stabilizers looked like a roadway
up into the underbelly of the rig.
So I raised them and haven't had a problem since.
Now when the rig is stored the stabilizers are too.

If you are not using the trailer, the stabilizers can be either up or down...since nobody is inside there is nothing to "stabilize." I leave mine up when storing, don't see any reason to put them down.

Bonscott,

I'm with Tom on this one. Since we're not in the trailer we leave the stabilizers up.

When I park the RV for extended periods (at home), it's an extra step (more work) to put the rear stabilizers down. Since we are not using the RV then any way, we leave them up. Saves time parking and when we are ready to leave.

I don’t think there is a right or wrong here. I believe it’s a personal preference. Myself, I always leave them down because sometimes during the off season I will go out there, fire up the furnace, push out the slides and watch movies or something! I don’t think it would make any difference as to the necessity of having them down other than possibly using it on occasions.

I raise my rear stabilizers when leaving the rig as in the past I have noticed some settling of the tires as the rain softens the ground in the storage yard where I store it. The settling puts extra stress on them. If I put the slides out I do put the stabilizers down. Thanks kandharry for your thoughts on the mouse problem. We have had a squirrel in the rear end cap and I think that's how it entered.

I would leave them up while in storage. If a tire or tires were to lose pressure the weight would be transfered to the stabilizer. These stabilizers are not designed for that kind of weight.

I am with you Bill! I leave mine down for the same reasons you do!
