Electric heating of Water

I have been using my electric mode to heat the water heater for the past two months and everything is working fine. Wait I mean everything WAS working fine. After washing the dishes this morning I started to hear a hissing sound from the area of the water heater. I immediately took off the cover panel expecting to see water shooting someplace. Nothing. I went to the breaker panel and turned off the heater breaker and the hissing sound stopped. Turned it back on and it started again. I know the tank is full of water. Did my heating element fail??? Thought I would ask here on the forum because you all seem to be smarter than the dealers service departments. If I need to have the element replaced, I will have them do it under warranty.

I have had that [s]problem[/s] noise in ours. I was not comfortable with it but have had no problem with the lack of hot water and it has been doing it for a year. Unless someone identifies a problem I think you are ok.

Both of my units have made the sound when using electric. I believe it is a normal sound of the cold and hot meeting each other that causes the sound. I have also been known to be wrong.

It's a normal sound for electric. Need to flush out your hot water heater occasionally... it quiets that noise.

Ours also makes those noises. We notice it more on this 3400 than we did on our 3295 because of the location of the heater. I wonder if covering the tank with blanket insulation would hush the sound?

I think it is scale on the heating element, annoying, but harmless.....at this point. As long as you get hot water, you should be fine.
