This is a series of pictures we took while repairing our shades a few years ago. I thought I would post them in the hopes that it would help other people understand how they are put together and can be repaired.

I am convinced that a lot of shade problems are the result of too much tension on the cords. My suggestion is to apply only the minimum tension required to make the shades stay in the up position.

Excellent, John. I have saved that webpage. I hope you don't mind. I noticed on ours that Keystone did not install the bobbins so that the string tension can be easily loosened. They have the strings noted in a hole on the bobbin with no material wrapped around the bobbin. I tried to undo one of the knots but was unsuccessful. Someday I'll need to adjust tension and will try again.

Right on John. I agree with you about to much tension on the cords. With our new Monty we had a problem with one of the shades and it was the only one that I noticed that had high tension on the cords. The shade was hard to pull up and down and the result was the shade would all of a sudden when lowering or raising the shade would go lop sided and the end cap would pop off causing the shade to come out of the track holding the material.
I think the best thing to do is to just simply adjust the tension on the cords so the shades can be raised and lowered without a lot of resistance. Of course if they are to loose they will come down on their own when the 5er is towed.

Nice pictures. But how did u get the blind out from under the valence? I am going to buy a complete replacement shade.

I'm in the process of loosing up all the strings till it just holds the shade up, I was also told to always tow with all the shades down to keep them from falling.

If you do get new shades, I would still suggest installing the bobbins as pictured, rather than the way the do at the factory. Wind a couple of turns of cord around the bobbin and use the bobbin to fine tune the tension, so that they will just stay up on their own.

We were told that we should travel with the shades up, to reduce cord fraying. That said, we usually do leave them down.

Speaking of the bobbins, we purchased a few clear sewing machine bobbins as spares because the originals become brittle and break from time to time.

Thanks for the great pictures! I made a repair on one of our shades not long ago, dreaded it but it really wasn’t that bad once I got into it.

We made the repair on one of our, just today. Had trouble finding the right mason line (#15), but found the #1 braided mason line, and used that. I hope it will hold up over time. I think it might be a little stronger than the twisted mason line, and hopefully it won't abrade as quickly.
