Fort Pickens Campground, ..

I got a satalite view of Fort Pickens Campground across the bay from Pensacola, Fla and it looked pretty bad after Ivan. Sections of the road were gone and the campground was still flooded. I could see trees down in the Park and considerable damage up at the Fort itself to the buildings. Does anyone know when the Park will be back up and running? .. It was a super place to go. ... The Fort Pickens Campground is currently closed due to damage resulting from Hurricane Ivan on September 15, 2004. The campground is closed indefinitely.

The above was taken from http://www.nps.gov/guis/pphtml/camping.html

We usually spend at least a week in the Ft. Pickens campground every Spring. We were last there in May of this year. It is surely one of our favorite places in the entire country. This note is just to say that we are hoping that we will be able to go back before too long.

Incidentally, our first visit to Ft. Pickens was 40 years ago (1962) when it was a state park and we were camping in a borrowed tent. We have been back many times since.

We were scheduled to be there on Wednesday before Ivan and got a call from the Park service saying they were evacuating the Park. From the looks of the satalite photos it will take quite a while before they recover. ...

It is much the same story for Gulf State Park at Gulf Shores AL. They are telling us it may be a year before they can re-open. I think most of the water's edge places between Fort Pickens and Fort Morgan must have taken a bad hit. We are going to Gulf Shores anyway, we will have to stay in a less attractive private park (in our opinion anyway). We are going to see if there is any way we can volunteer our help with the recovery efforts.

John and Donna, ... The water at Gulf Shores came all the way up to the bay bridge. The satalite photos show great resolution on the destruction of the Park. .. The road out to Fort Pickens seems to be cut in several places and during high tide appears to come on into the bay. .. Sand will have to be pumped on to the causeway to re-build the road. I was just wondering if anyone down there had heard a schedule of repair? .. Relichunter
