Sorry to hear about the unwanted disconnect, I have the Reese 16 K also, and a 15 K before that. I don't understand if the jaws are closed all the way and you lock the release handle to the table it should be secure, but if the jaws aren't closed all the way you cant lock the release handle because it wont line up properly to put the lock catch on table. something is not right on your Reese table lock. I have never had or do I want what happened to you, to fall my way.
I glad your insurance co fixed it for you without a penalties.
I will look a lot closer to my table and pin box more carefully from now on.

Krease ... you need to identify what hitch you're speaking of ... should I follow your instructions on closed jaws on my Curt hitch, the only thing that will happen is my truck will try to push my fiver backwards. When hitching up, you have to lift a lock arm and pull the handle to pop the jaws open to couple up a Curt.

The same is true of my B & W.

Hitch brand? I'm betting it's Reese.

It was a Reese 16K Pro Series

Doesn't seem to happen with any other hitch but a Reese...

We have the Reese 16k hitch with the manual slider and to date have not had any issues with it (knock on wood). Like JandC and timandsusan I ALWAYS do the pull test with the landing gear up 2" and the tailgate down. I also pull the hitch out of the truck every couple of months and do a thorough cleaning and inspection. After I feel confident that the hitch is in acceptable condition I lubricate the moving parts and re-install. So far I have no complaints with the Reese hitch. Mine is not the pro series as I felt the locking bar that slides in front of the king pin was NOT fail proof and could bend fairly easily. Mine has the locking jaws and so far so good. Tim

It is a Slider but I do not use it as a slider. if that makes sense.
And, my hitch has jaws rather that a solid slide bar.

Mike -
Sorry to hear about your experience. Lots of good suggestions, but too late to help. I will guarantee that it could happen to anyone regardless of brand of hitch. All you have to do is get in a hurry one time. We had a near similar occurence twice - once by not even releasing the arm (got distracted) and once on a high hitch. About all you can do to assure no issues is to make sure you have a good routine, follow it, and not let yourself get distracted. I know that Terrie and I became religious about the pull test, I use a padlock on the lever so it can't get activated maliciously and put the safety cable into the lock. Good luck in the future. And remember, we are all one distraction away from a similar occurence.
