Worthy of consideration is ...

It's an hour from San Diego but is well positioned to everything (check a map)and affordable. We looked at the better parks closer to San Diego but this one won out when everything was considered.

We stayed at Chula Vista RV Resort. Nice park, great location, little pricey. Jim

We have stayed here a couple of times: http://missionbayrvresort.com/ It's pretty close to everything down town. Pretty clean and good security.

The Chula Vista RV Resort is nice but I don't consider that very central. It is reasonable distance from downtown San Diego, Balboa Park, Coronado Island, Tijuana, though. Vicki grew up in Chula Vista and all our kids were born there and I lived in the SD area for nine years.
Other parks we've stayed at include Circle RV Park in El Cajon and Paradise by the Sea RV Resort in Oceanside. We also would use Santee Lakes. But which we choose depends on our plans for that trip. To get anywhere in the outer reaches of metro SD from Chula Vista means lots of heavy traffic. But getting to downtown SD from those other places means the same. So don't forget to consider where you plan to travel in the area before you decide on a park.
Good luck. San Diego is a beautiful area to visit. I just wish it weren't so crowded.

The light rail station is about a mile from the Chula Vista Park, it goes almost everywhere you will want to go.
We use it and never have to look for a parking space.

Thanks all for the help we have decided to stay at Santee Lakes. The trolly is a couple of miles from the park and using the 52 to get to the coast is very easy also (15 miles). They have seven lakes and they stock three of them with Trout. The season just opened we were told.
