Lady Bird's Legacy

There has been a lot on the news these last couple of days about Lady Bird Johnson's Legacy. She had a lot to do with the fact that the medians of our highways and interstates throughout this country have beautiful displays of wildflowers. Take a moment to think of where you have been where you have been impressed with the beauty of these flowers?

Thank you, Al and Nita, for these gracious words about Mrs. Johnson. We are all very much in debt to her for her efforts to make our highways, if not always beautiful, at least not as unsightly as they might have become were it not for those efforts.

She was born here in East Texas, at Karnack (about 30 miles from our home). She graduated from high school at Marshall, Texas before going on to Austin and the University of Texas where she met Lyndon Johnson. She never lived in East Texas again, but never forgot the good things about her heritage, especially the beauty of our springtime.

She was a true Southern lady and at the same time a strong woman who made a difference for the better in our nation and in the world.

If I'm not mistaken I believe it was also through her efforts that a lot of the billboards and other eyesores were removed from the side of the interstates (can you tell what I think of those things). Too bad they are coming back so prolifically (I hope that is a word) today. Can't see the countryside in some places for the billboards and advertisements. Going into Kansas City you now even have digital billboards that change the advertisement every so often as you approach. Just my .02
