Freezer

We have found that the freezer in our unit is not big enough. I know some of you have added freezers. Do you need special wiring? Where did you put it? I have put added drawers in the closet where a washer and dryer would go, so that spot is out. Ref. is big enough for the beer.

Hi Carol,
We bought a freezer from Sears, we decided to remove one of the recliner-rocker chairs and put it there, at the back of our 3400RL, we also have a small refrigerator we keep right by the door in the long dining room slide. If we didn't have the refrigerator, the freezer would go there. The outlet nearby should be fine, just depends on what is running on it, they draw very little running amps. I did install a dedicated 20 amp line for my freezer, directly to the campground electrical supply post.
As you can see from one of pictures below, the freezer in the Lowe's small refrigerator is quite large, this may fill the gap for you.....even room for mucho Corono....
We opted for an additional chest freezer because we love the meat here in Kansas City, mucho Ribeyeo..

I don't have a freezer right now but will when we long time in 3 yrs. I also have a plug in in the rear of the camper now for this and electric heats that we heat with. I changed out the existing receptacle box with a new 20 Amp receptacle plug-in. I ran a wire from a new 20 Amp breaker to the upper plug on the new receptacle for it's power and on the lower plug of that receptacle there is a cord wired to it that can be plugged into the CG main 110 volt outlet.SeeYa

WE have a 5foot chest freezer which we travel with, fits through door with ease and have it between chairs, have taken it to Yuma for the winter and all you have to do is plug into electric each nite no extra wiring and is easily removed if needed. I put rug on steps and slideit out or two guys can carry it easy, but u should empty if first.

We have a 3.5 CI Heier freezer that we put at the rear of our 3400 in place of one of the recliners. It holds 150lbs of frozen food...that is a lot. It runs on AC power only and when we are on the road it is of course unpowered but it will only warm up maybe 2 or 3 degrees from 0 degrees in a 8 10 hour day.

We will have to look into getting something. I buy my meat bulk style and break down the packages for the two of us. Saves a little bit of money that way. But the freezer compartment in the ref. doesn't hold all that much when you put in other things.
Thanks.

Carol, we just got back from Sam's Club, bought bulk as well. I won $700.00 at the Casino last night, spent $500.00 on groceries and supplies.
We have the Seal a Meal vacuum pack machine, love it.
Looks like you and I have the same idea, Rich, but you beat me to it.

Chuck and Carol,

We bought an Avanti 3.2 cu ft. upright. It cost around $150. It is 32 inches tall and sits at the end of the kitchen counter, very convenient, and adds counter space. We also use it for bulk purchases, but as soon as possible, we try to move everything up to the Montana freezer. We try not to run the freezer so much when we dry camp 'cause it eats up the battery power. We found by putting a digital temperature monitor inside, we can plug and unplug the freezer when it gets close to 32 degrees.

We also purchased a small ice maker, this frees up lots of space in the freezer for ice-making and ice storage.

Where do you buy the Avanti 3.2 cu ft or the CI Heier 3.5 cu ft?

We bought our Avanti freezer at Conn's in Harlingen, TX. Didn't have any luck at Home Depot, Lowes, or Sears. Perhaps they carry them in some stores. We liked it because we wanted an upright freezer. You might go to http://www.avantiproducts.com/ and contact them for a local distributor.

Since we removed two of the dining room chairs, would it fit in that corner? Would Chuck need to run special wiring? There is an electrical outlet there which we don't use.

Carol

Chuck is always yelling at me about weight. Saying I take too many clothes (tools I am told don't weigh as much ) So how much do these things weigh (unloaded of course)?

I would google both of those freezers then find the dealer in your area. There are pro's and cons to both brands. The Avanti has a wider choice of front opening freezers which to us is easier to deal with as with the top opening Haier everything you want always seems to be at the bottom of the freezer. However as you know cold air is heavy and with the top opener the cold stays down in the freezer when you open it but with the front opener everytime you open the freezer the cold air spills out on the floor.Note at the super markets the reach down freezers have no doors...don't need them as the cold air stays put.We felt the the top opener was more suitable for the RV everything considered.

Chuck and Carol,

I'm not sure where we bought it, but it was from New York, just google and you will find them. Lowe's and Home Depot do not carry the Avanti in our area, but when we bought ours, the shipping was free.

We really like the upright, it sits right at the end of the counter so we get extra counter space.

The upright works well for us, it comes with drawers that can be removed. We found it easier to stack food inside without some of the drawers. The door is reversible.

Empty, it weighs very little. I was able to carry it inside by myself.

When traveling, we have a strap that we velcro it to a counter bracket, and we also lock it.

Never would have a front opener in the stick house, exactly for the reason you describe. And I would definitely do my research before purchasing either. I had a hard time convincing myself to buy the Avanti because of the tag on it which says, "Made in China". Hopefully it's better than some of the crap Keystone uses in it's RVs.

Well don't know about the "made in China " thing..most everything is made somewhere else these days Don't think the Haier is built around here either. When driving for our County MRDD we had occasion to be in many hospitals and nursing homes and we saw the Haier brand in a lot of them. When we asked the answer was always they are reliable, dependable and cost effective.

Bought the Avanti over a year ago, it is the 3.2 cu ft. upright. Love it. Holds it's cool about 12 hours unplugged. We have it sitting in the dining room slide; pushed the table all the to the end and put the freezer in the corner. Fits perfectly. We have it full of elk and antelope meat. It also serves as our espresso bar as the coffee machine sits right on top of it.

We have the Avanti freezer and I love it. I got it on line with free shipping,
but I had gone to Home depot and they had them but you had to order it. We have it in the down closet. We just moved our table so as you eat you look out the large window and moved the table closer to the door so there would be lots of room if a person wanted to put it between the table and the sofa.

I bought an Avanti 3.5 c.f. front opener from Rex Electronics in Fl. before my trip to Alaska. I needed and purchased another freezer in Anchorage from Sears, a 7.O front opener, a sears model that fit in the W/D closet with no problems. I sold the Avanti to a friend when I got back to Ga.
The Sears model is only 22" wide and allows me to have a shelf on top or hand stuff.
