Power Convertor- Montana 3400 RL

I believe my power converter is getting ready to take a crap. I can hear a humming noise every now and then from the wall in the bathroom. Has anyone replaced one of these? How difficult? Also it the below the correct model?

lota Converter/Charger Deck Mount 55 Amp DLS-55

Thanks in advance.

Yes it's an Iota DLS-55 - it has a thermostatically controlled fan which comes on whenever the converter gets warm. The humming noise you hear every now and then is most likely just the cooling fan coming on, nothing to worry about. It vents into the washer/dryer closet, the next time you hear the noise check the vent you'll find in the ceiling there and you'll feel some heat coming out of it.

I thought I would show you where it is and what it looks like, it is not a pretty sight.. But if you are careful and all the wires are tight there is minimal danger of anything shocking you.
Why they stuck it in there I do not know, but a bad plan for the Trailer owner. There are 2 30 amp fuses in the converter you might have to change.. reverse polarity, so keep a few on hand. Automotive type; Green.

and yes, it is behind all the yellow wires in the first picture

They say that reality sucks... wiring in my 2013 is just as crappy...although not packed into such a small space. John

Maybe a bearing in the fan then, it is much noisier than what it used to be.

Thanks for the help.

Get the charger's specific model and serial number and contact Iota. The fans are likely available as a replacement part. From Ozz's picture it looks like the fan may be mounted on the case exterior and be relatively easily replaced. Bit hard to tell.
If you are really handy you can probably just buy one and adapt it. You will have to see the old fan first to be sure of its operation voltage and its actual size and flow.

Just be carefull to mount it the same way as the old so the air goes the right way. SOme of these fans have to be inspected fairly carefully to find the direction arrow.
Most of these fans have a long life but of course there always has to be one that falls short of expectations.

I have had very good experience dealing with Iota with a previous SOB. You might get the numbers off the converter and call them. They might just send you a new fan at no charge.

Also be aware there is a small fuse on the ckt board inside the converter and the tag on the Iota converter says there are no user serviceable components inside.

I was at a RV shop and saw a Iota converter in a trash can. They had thrown it away, Had sold the customer a new one. I asked if I could have it, thinking I might salvage the fan or something. Took it apart, found the small fuse inside, replaced it, been using it in my garage for a 12vdc power supply for probably 10 years.
