Ice alarm

In the Duramax oil change thread, I make reference to reading the manual. The reason I was even reading the regular gas version of the manual is that I was trying find out about the ICE alarm that is built into the rear view mirror.

Does anyone know what triggers this alarm? It seems to come on briefly when I start the engine at temperatures below 3 degrees Celsius (about 37F). I have never seen it come on when I am driving, even at below freeszing temperatures. Anyone know anything about the ICE alarm in a GM? Thanks!

OntMont,

I'm not sure but I think it's on when "black ice" is a potential problem, somewhere between 28 & 37 (I don't know here, I'm guessing). The reason I think so is our Volvo also has a similar feature only it's a light that's on during black ice conditions. I've seen mine on the 07 Classic read ICE in those similar temps.

Just my thoughts.

We owned a 2500HD and a 3500 1 ton dually with all the bells and whistles. The Ice alert is triggered by the temperture, when our showed 32 degrees it would flash the Ice alert. GBY...

Temperture is what triggers the ICE alert. Anything under 37 degrees will trip the alert.

Our 03 2500HD had it and YES it only came on when temps were down around 37 or less but I got to the point that I didn't notice it after awhile and have no idea how low it would go. When I came out and it was freezing cold I didn't need my truck telling me what I was already well aware of.
The 05 has never been in temps below 40 so I have no idea if it works or if it even has one and I surely don't wanna find out.

On my 05 model it will also come on when driving down the road when the temperature drops to around 34.

This is common in most GM vehicles today. My Cadillac has this feature. It comes on when the temprature is below about 37 degrees and will come on while driving down the road.

I find it to be a good reminder, Of course all our roads in Alaska are icy this time of year....

I've been driving Chevy trucks/motor homes for years, this is just another exmple of GM wasting resources on a feature that is just about worthless. Honda/Toyota add numerous features to their vehicles every year that actually provide a benefit for the driver and passengers. I don't need a reminder that it's cold outside...I can figure that out all by myself.

I'm not sure what triggers this. My wife had a 1999 Yukon and a Chevy Blazer that did this. My 2000 Park Ave, with all the bells and whistles does NOT do this - but temp readout is in the dash. Now our GMC 2500HD does it, but not all the time. I believe it only happens if the computer notices the temp is dropping while driving, as mentioned above. I thought mine was triggered at 37 if I recall correctly.

Here in Central FL we have not seen that flash on our mirror yet... and it better not.

Someone hear should call GM and ask about this. Not me though...

Interesting that my wife has a new '07 Toyota. One of her complaints is the missing temp indicator for O/S temp. Her '05 had it.

Of course Toyota figured if you wish to know how cold it is outside all you'd need to do is hold your hand out the window...

On the news today they said Toyota has figured out a way for the car to tell if you have been drinking and turn itself off. This should be interesting about 2am along the city interstates.

THAT concept is not new. In several cities already, if you are convicted of a DUI, they can and will install a device in your car; You must blow into it and pass before the ignition system will respond and start the vehicle. Shows no favoritism to Toyota or whomever.

They must have known Superman was going to drive it. (Sensors in fingers?)

Right, but I think the new concept is that a car mfr is actually going to produce a vehicle with this feature already built in for distribution to auto dealerships. Up until now these devices have been installed "after market" by Court order in existing vehicles on a very limited basis. Unless I misunderstood Okie Guy's post...

Just had a thought. I could not understand who would ever buy a car like. HOWEVER... maybe a parent buying a car for their teenage son or daughter??? Better get a HUGE break on a car like that from your insurance company, too.

I like the O/S temp guage (especially in the winter when we are heading south and the number keeps going up), my comments were directed at the 'ice alarm.'

I also watch the temp all the time in all my vehicles. Not sure of the value of extra time and effort programing the "ICE" function into the mirror temp display. Most of the time it's wrong. The remainder of the time, it's too late - I've already discovered that fact...
