Hot Rod Powerstroke

In the January 2005 issue of Texas Fish & Game magazine there is an article about a F-250 (assume it is a 2004) 6.0L 4x4 Powerstroke equipped with a Banks "Six-Gun Bundle" head to head with a Mustang GT 4.6L V-8 on a 1/8 mile (not the standard 1/4 mile) drag strip in Irwindale, Ca. and supervised by the raceway staff last August. The 6860# F-250 beat the 3500# Mustang nine times in a row. Best time for the F-250 was 9.93 seconds at 77.35 MPH, the Mustang ET was 9.98 at 76.07 MPH. The article goes on with positive comments about the upgraded Banks system to enhance the trucks pulling capabilities and the rates the increase in HP and torque from stock at 236 to 374 HP and 455 to 686 foot pounds of torque. Since the race Banks has bigger and better system called "The Big Hoss Bundle" which gives 18 HP and 44 pounds torque more than the "Six-Gun Bundle". Some of the increase comes from increasing the size of the exhaust system. I think that Banks must have had a lot to do with setting up the race, but quite a feat for a truck to out run a sports car.

That's moving right along. One of the magazines timed a brand new, stock, 2003 F350 supercab, 3.73 axle, 6.0L powerstroke with torqueshift at 8.8 seconds, zero to sixty. They then put 2,750 lbs of rocks in the bed and it took 9.9 seconds. The reason I remember this is that the truck was almost identical to the one we had at the time. Ours weiged 7200 lbs with no passengers. Our youngest son, a former Mustang GT owner, was a bit wide-eyed when I had to punch it in a rush hour lane change. His comment was something about "serious throwback power.". Diesels have come a long, long ways. Somewhere around here I still have the link to that test.

When I goose my hypertech enhanced 7.3, I get some black smoke out the back. It sort of puts a smile on my face when, for whatever reason, I find it desireable to "smokeum".
