Self-Contained (speed box) AC Outlets

Any thoughts on the safety of self-contained speed box outlets that are used in RV's? I am not convinced that push in type connections are safe; might be ok if they used the correct tool.

I was going to change one of these to an outlet that has USB ports, then got to thinking how safe these self-contained outlets are. The next thought was why not change all the self-contained outlets for conventional boxes (old work) and outlets. Going too far?

I am aware there will be some issues:
  • Some locations will not accommodate a standard box; maybe a shallow one
  • Will there be enough wire to do this?

Like you, I have never cared for them or that type connection. But considering how many are out there, it is pretty rare to hear of anyone having an issue with one. And never read about a fire from one. 14 years and never had any problems with mine. Even with wife running a 1500 watt hair dryer.

Yes those Tyco receptacles and hidden junction boxes are problematic IF the tech did NOT punch down the wires correctly into the contacts.
I have opened every receptacle and junction box I have found and inspected them. Ours are all good.
You can change out the receptacles. You can use an "old work" box. If it's not deep enough you can get an extender like the one the GFCI in your bathroom is mounted in.

That burned one looks like the transition connection for a slide. Same press type connections, but can’t remember seeing a post about an outlet burning like that.

The Self Contained Devices are used in lieu of a typical junction box you would see in a home. If you replace them, you will need to install a junction box (old work as mentioned above) which could be problematic.

As for the quick punch SCDs, the quick punch concept has been in use for quite awhile. Even outlets and light switches for your home usually have a quick grip hole into which you insert the stripped wire, no need for tightening nuts (except to lock them down) making installation an easy task. If these were risky, the industry would have moved on to a different technology by now. Instead, new RVs are expanding their use especially for 12V connections.

I couldn't believe it the first time I ran into one of those many years ago. I had an intermittent situation with that outlet and when I opened it up it got updated using an old work box and a normal residential outlet.

I have not gone though the rest of the rig pulling them out, but if I ever need to remove one for whatever reason I will update it.

Trying to imagine an electrical in a residential home environment approving such a device in new construction, but I cannot refer to anything in the NEC that would prohibit them.
