Vehicle Registration California

I love living in far Northern California but I'm still in shock from my $670 registration fee for my 2018 rig. It's one thing to pay $800 for my truck, but come on man!

Gas taxes supposedly for "road maintenance", registration increases for "road maintenance"?

I'm hoping the Greater Idaho thing takes off in Oregon before I die so I can move there. It's just not right. How can folks afford to RV?

It's California. That is the reason.

In California everything is "special".
We even have special gas that of course costs more.

I budget $130 per month for annual DMV fees in CA not counting smog checks. Planning on moving to NV this time next year but DMV there isn't much better. Somobody has to pay for those that don't.

You are right.......we just budget for it, as painful as it is.!! Feel lucky you do not pay an annual personal property tax on the value of your trailer like we do on boats. Our last year's California sailboat property tax bill was $....... (really high by comparison).

In Washington, if you stay out of the King/Snohomish/Pierce county areas and their Sound Transit tax, you'll only pay about $50 to register your RV.

The wife and I won a trailer when we were living in San Diego. Because the trailer was delivered to us at home from out of state my licence fees for the trailer they wanted $4000.00. I told them to shove it and we move to North Carolina. Where we paid $325. for permit tags.(1 time cost).

What portion of the $4,000 was license fee and what portion was sales tax on the prize? The DMV will collect both.

Truck and trailer in South Dakota is about $320. They were, together in California when we purchased them, about $1500.

I didn't ask and we had all ready paid the taxes when we won the trailer they sent us the tax bill. Also we had to pay a gift tax to the State for winning that trailer. With all the taxes we were looking at about 10, to $12,000 dollars plus the $4,000 DMV fees.

By the way this was on a $125,000 5er.

Northern Wisconsin is pretty beautiful too. I pay $15.00 per year for my 2015 Montana license plates. Now that is is a big difference.

Assuming your bought a 2020 5th whee for $125,000 today, the registration fee would be 1,096.00. ANythig more is "sales tax/use fee"
Source: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/wasapp/FeeCal...VehicleFees.do

So there must have been other charges (difference between sales tax selling state and CA?)

If it had been me, I would have gladly paid all the taxes/fees, put it on the market for $70-80K and been happy with a $50K profit.

I don't know what the fees were for. All I know is for me to plate and reg. the trailer they wanted $4000. I told them to stick it where the sun does not shine and reg. it in North Carolina. Problem Solved......

I wonder what the real difference is in taxes on campers and motor vehicles from state to state. Where one charges one tax another state charges another tax and I wonder if they wind up about the same over the life of the vehicle.

Lived in Hawaii for 16 1/2 years. Everything is shipped or flown in. One example, sugar cane grown in Hawaii is not processed in Hawaii. Its harvested then shipped to California for processing then shipped back to Hawaii for sale. WHAT ????
When I moved to Ohio, I know, "what were you thinking"?, Ohioans were complaining about the cost of gasoline. For me, the price was a welcome break. As was the cost of everything else.
Anyway, back on topic.
Ohio - 2016 truck, 2010 car, 1991 boat, 1991 boat trailer, 2016 RV
Total $219 a year.

I feel ya on the registration fees for the RV, it’s crazy. As far as the truck I just bought I was told it was over 1300. I have DV plates so I get dmv fees waived for 1 vehicle so paying the rv in the big scheme of things is not too bad...

Cheaters

My cheating brother-in-law, who lives in Southern California and owns a half dozen vehicles and a 100k Rv has figured out a way to cheat at his registration by claiming residency in another state, although he lives full time in California, and yet he pay pennies for his vehicle registrations. While I am on SS for income and pay more on my two vehicles and RV than he will ever pay in a lifetime. I advise any young person who can, GET OUT OF CALIFORNIA.

Not sure in California but other states have been chasing after these people that do this and they been charging them with tax evasion and besides getting fines and having to pay all the back taxes some get jail time.

I also love living in Northern California (Butte county) but we only do a maximum of 5 months and 29 days a year, the remainder of the year is either in, coming from or going to Florida. Makes financial sense for us.

For Texas - I have to get it inspected first. I drove it to the nearest RV Dealer (about 10 miles). No appointment necessary - but I usually do it early in the morning at 8:00 or so. The guy walks around checks the lights, looks at the tires for cracking, and drives it around the parking lot to test the brakes. I am usually done in 1 hour...$7.00 for the inspection.

Then I can pay for the license tag on line...$133.70. The little "peel -n-stick" tag comes in the mail in a week or so. I usually wait until after sundown to go out and put the sticker on the plate because the stars at night are big and bright!
