Porta Bote

I purchased a 2020 331RL and would like to take my 12' porta bote with me camping. After some research seeing how others with 5th wheels carried them, I planned on storing it under the 5th wheel. But unfortunately, after measuring my ground clearance would be minimal with the porta bote under either the front or back.

Has anyone hauled or mounted a porta bote under their newer 5th wheel with any success given the ground clearance?

I had a porta bote many years ago and the only way I could safely take it with my 5er was inside. I didn't keep it long and decided I preferred a zodiac style inflatable boat instead. I found it easier to transport (usually on a rear cargo deck) and thought it was more comfortable to sit in. Plus I could use a larger motor to get around faster but also easily troll for fishing. Have caught many trout in it.

Take a look at the US Rack Fifth Wheel Rack. I am hauling my 12’ Hobie kayak on it. I am in the process of mounting my Thule bike rack to it so I can haul (2) bikes and a kayak. Not cheap. I am doing this with a Ram 3500 SB with a PullRite Superlight 2600.

I should mention, with the 2600, I am able to remove the hitch easily when I arrive at a campground and have a clean bed to carry my kayak. I used a Thule goalpost with roof rack, and that is scary by yourself. With this, I am able to safely put the kayak on the roof by myself.

I and my buddy both had Porta-botes mounted on a roller assembly under the front of the 5th wheel. Of course that was before the dropped frame. On my current 5th, with the dropped frame, I figured I could mount it under the rear of the RV *BUT* I have to do something with the spare tire carrier assembly. I haven't worked on it as the Bote is stored in OR.

When I do decide to carry it again, I will go with a front goal post and a roof rack. At 60 lbs, loading it is not a big deal.

They seem able to flatten and fairly compact. Behind the rear axle will almost always provide clearance. Until the blowout happens. With these dropped frames and all that under storage. Could it not be stored there. Or is the length an issue. I believe they are expensive for what they are. I have a blowup and two paddles. Works for me. No name brand. Just a run of the mill and disposable when worn out. I won't be upset if that happens blub blub and swim for the shore. But I don't have the motivation to troll with it manually. Maybe an electric motor. But paddles work for calm days.
