Extended warranties

I'm sure this subject has been hashed out many times over. I have never invested in an extended warranty for any of my vehicles. However, with this new truck I have been mulling it over and wondering what many of you have done. Now I know, if something major happens the warranty can be a God send. But if nothing major happens then that was a lot of money spent for something not used.*
That being said, IF I were to invest in an extended warranty for my tow vehicle, what might be the best option? The manufacturer's ESP of an after market policy? If after market, which one, and why?*

We use the Ford ESP plan have had it since the three year warranty ran out and just renewed again this month. We have not had to use it for a major failure but you might want to check out the cost of a major failure, Motor, transition, Injectors, turbo.

Generally not a believer in extended warranties.. However have always had extended warranties on our diesel trucks, repair costs are just too high

Been great asset for me

I have a 2003 F-350 lariat diesel.. Bought it in 2006 and added the extended Ford warranty to it. Because it had the 6.0 liter engine I felt it was necessary. Renewed it every three years, costing around $3000 each time. The repairs that I have had to endure over those years have been far greater than my expenses. I've been fortunate that each time I have broken down it was near a Ford dealer and the convenience was worth it. Not only did it cover the cost of repairs, but paid for camping fees and car rental and some food during the time of repairs. Unfortunately, they only offer extended warranties on vehicles under 100,000 miles, and at 117,000 I have passed that limit. Looking into other options at this point since I am not prepared to pay 50 - 75K for a new one

We bought the Ford ESP for our 2015 F350 dually. The truck was out of initial warranty (36K miles) in 16 months. We are happy that we have it since I've had electrical problems with it recently and it only cost me $100 deductible on significant hours to trace and diagnose the problem. For us, being a 70K truck that is towing a 65K+ trailer around, its worth it since we could have an unlikely water landing in the likeliest of places. Too many electronics now to not have good coverage. I used to be able to work on cars, now I don't have the right tools to diagnose the issues that can arise with the computer networks talking with all the electronic modules on board.

We have it on our 5th wheel as well. It has paid off multiple times already.

On a diesel, I would do it and i have it now, because of the very large expense involving diesels and the wear and tear using it to tow your unit all over the country. but its up to you of course.

generally the new car warranites are 3 parts. a 3year/36K, a power train coverage and then the diesel part which is, at least for ford, 5 year/100000 miles.

so from my stand point the extended warranty is a waste of money

I don't use extended warranties. Those companies are in business to make money...and they are doing quite well. Plus, as noted above, you get a pretty good warranty with a diesel.

Very personal decision, you need to come to grips with what makes you feel secure. My 2016 GMC Sierra Denali Duramax is totally covered from stem to stern for 120,000 miles . Makes me feel good.

Surprise these warranty companies are in business to make money same as all companies.Might want t o read that 5YR 100K warranty on the diesel motor on the Ford warranty or better yet go to the Ford dealer and ask them exactly what is covered.

My recent experience with our 15 F350 being out of 36/36000 is that electronics, modules, computers, networks are not covered under 5/100000.

We did opt for extended warranty, our cost so far has been $100 deductible.

In most cases I don't buy them but for the cars(truck) and the rig a must have. JMHO

I have the extended warranties on both my 5th wheel and F350. Both have already paid for themselves. With the 5th wheel it was the solenoid for the slides and a leaky seal on one of the slide outs. The F350 needed new hubs that were frozen, a brake limiting switch for the 5th wheel and new brakes caused by the wear and tear due to the malfunctioning brake connection. I have a friend who is a Ford certified Master Mechanic and he suggested I buy the extended warranties because most of the engine controls are electronic and can go at any minute without warning. They either work or they don't. Often the diagnostic time is a real wallet drainer. I use the Ford extended warranty I purchase from the dealer and they allow monthly payments with direct billing. Fiver policy is through Campers World.

Some people put their money in the bank knowing they will loose value on it. When they take it out it will buy less than it did when they put it in. Some people put their money in the stock market. When they take it out it will probably be worth more than when they put it in, if they leave it long enough.
You need to decide which type of person you are before you put your money or in or don't put it in an ESP. It's yo money!

My present extended warranty is going to expire this December on my 2007 Chevy D/A. The original 5yr/ 100,000 expired in 2012. I went to the dealer and bought a 4yr/48,000 0 deductible Premimum Plus through National Warranty for $2900.It also had a Wear and Tear plan. I definately paid too much. Went on the internet after reading about extended warranties from those of you that bought them other than dealers. Got a quote of about $1800 for 4yr/48,000, $100 deductible if I bought before July of this year. The new 2018 would be coming out and my truck would be 1 yr older and the price would go up. My 2007 has just 76,000 miles on it and once it reaches 100,000 the coverage would be different according to him. We have hopefully 2 major long trips in the next couple of years and feel the extended warranty is required. 4 years later and 22,000 more miles and the price is almost $1,000 cheaper, although I would have $100 deduct instead of 0 deduct. The 0 deduct was I think $300 more.

I bought Ford's ESP but not from the dealer we bought the truck from. Purchased it on line and yes it is an authentic ESP from a dealer in Connecticut. Saved a good bit on it!

I bought an extended warranty for my truck. This is why, with newer trucks having so much technology (electronics - computers, etc) a repair cost could equal the warranty cost the first repair. I paid $1800 for a manufacturers extended warranty. I went to the North American Auto show in January and was told by a Ford rep that if you plan to own your truck longer than the manufacturer's 36 month warranty you may want an extended warranty. I guess it's just a risk game and depends how risky you are.

As add on my Ford is a 2008 and over 5 years old so that warranty was over/

Hi

I never in the past purchased an extended warranty but with this 2009 Duramax having 5 computer modules I purchased an additional 100,000 mile warranty when the mileage was 99,000. The water pump failed at 170,000 miles and the cost to me would have been just about what I paid for the extended warranty.

So I broke even on that deal and the warranty ends in 10,000 now so we will see what happens next.
