There is an advantage to not having your tailgate on the truck.





It is great to be able to open and close the front compartment while hooked to the Montana.

On top of that we can put the tailgate on while hooked to the Montana.

Yep...the advantage is that all the stuff in the bed rolls out during the tow which equals less overall weight. Actually, all kidding aside, I have been looking at the classic chassis rear bed system...but haven't figured out where the money would come from to buy one. So maybe going gate-less is a cheaper way.

I feel you need something on the end of truck. Few weeks ago I reported that a " iron patio table", flew out of a pickup in front of me ! That said, I now feel nothing is safe in back of truck bed at 65 mpg. At least a "V gate" would give you some liability protection. Not having any barrier "might, might " give you some legal protection if something decides to leave your bed !

My wife and I don’t have much trouble putting the tailgate on the truck while it is hooked to the Montana.

During the winter when we are carrying the model trains the truck bed has a train car in front of the hitch and stuff behind the hitch. I would never operate without a tailgate in the winter.

As it is now there isn’t anything in the bed of the truck except for some 4X4 wood blocks in front of the hitch.
