16K hitch ok?
Hi everyone!
We picked up our new 3400RL last week and needless to say, we're excited 
The sticker has the 3400RL GVWR at 15,500 and my hitch is a 16K. Should I be concerned about cutting it too close? I doubt that I could or would load it up to the limit - but one needs to be prepared for such things.
What size hitch do others here use, for their 3400 (or similar weighted) models?
[The winter months, can and sometimes will, give me too much time to think  ha ha!]

Hi Guy,
We just picked up our 3400 and use our existing 16K Reese Slider. I'm comfortable with that, however if I were to buy I new hitch I would bump it up to an 18K.
By the way CONGRATULATIONS!! Fine unit there and welcome to the Forum. Strange you and I have GVWRs at 15,500, and some of the previous 2007 3400 models came in around 13,700.

If you really pay close attention to your weights I think you could get by using a 16k hitch. Just make sure your pin weight does not exceed the ratings for your hitch. I am using a 16k Superglide, but my coach has the old GVWR.

Then you're going to have to drive that rig down here and sell that hitch to me before you upgrade to your Big Sky. You can't use it anyway!

Unless Keystone has really beefed up the Montana since we got our 3400 in Aug, that 15500 is the pin box capacity, not the GVWR of the coach. Check the sticker on the left front outside of the coach...our GVWR is 13975.
Your 16k hitch should be fine.

Would like to know for sure why the GVWR's on the 3400 all of a sudden went way up..Bigger Axles??? The 08 Brochure has the GVWR much higher..
Anyone have a Clue..for sure???
Web site spec's 3400 11,800 + 3940 = 15,740...How did that happen///

Rich, it doesnt say in their specs but it appears that they went to the 7000# axels as they did in the Big Sky. I think it would be the same frame and running gear.

I am planning on purchasing a 3400RL this spring and so I called Keystone today to get the weight conflict explained. I talked to a Cust. Service guy named Steven and he was not aware of the discrepency until I showed him that the web site showed one "carrying capacity" and the brochure showed another. He said he'd check into it and call me back. Later in the day he did call back and left a message that he was still persuing the answer and would call me tomorrow. I'll post any answer I get.
The web site showed all the Montana models with increased "carrying capacity" of from 1000 lb to 1700 lb. The 3075RL, 3295RK, 3500RL and the 3600RE don't seem to have changed much. I even notice a model that is not in the '07 brochure that I have, a 3485SA (?). More things to think about. Oh well, the 3400RL is still the front runner for us.
I'll post any info I get tomorrow.

Thank you for the replies.
If weather permits maybe I'll get a photo of the sticker and put it on here for all to see. I feel comfortable with the 16K hitch but wanted some feedback for reassurance.
I was going through all the paperwork that they give you, when I came across a second remote control (it was buried in amongst all the papers and warranty cards) for our bedroom TV. Another nice unforeseen surprise!

Let me know when you want my Superglide, I will be happy to bring it you....
The new Montana's have larger axles on them. Last I heard they were either 6,750 lb ratings or 6,500 lb, can't remember exactly which it was. None the less the new Montana's have a larger capacity on them because of larger axles...

Yep, that's what the web site says...rated to 3520 at max TP. So if the axles are 7000, the tires are okay, just barely.

Too cool mailman (sure is a shiney trailer for being surrounded by snow!!) Mine is BLACK and looks like it will stay that way for a while with -9 degrees tonight.
Now for the question. Our trailers are identical, manufacturered within the 30 days of each other. Our specifications and axles, tires, air pressure, everything is the same. Why do you have a different cargo limit on the "Tire and Loading Information" sticker than I do (I have 3,175). These numbers are not "rounded up" type numbers, they look to be precise. Where do they come from if the trailers are not weighed at the factory?????

I am curios, did your new 3400RL come with the Mission tires? Looking at the pics mailman posted, they are now running an ST tire not LT and the tread pattern looks different from the Missions...
