Hauling a trailer behind the Montana
Does anyone know the motor vehicle laws or federal laws in reference to hauling a small trailer behind the Montana?
Thanks for any information

In California it is only legal in some counties or on some highways. The counties that are highly populated don't allow it. The Trailer Life book as some information on this.
Happy trails..................

I've been wondering if the single wheel platforms I see behind fivers for hauling ATV's constitute a seperate trailer or are considered to be part of the fiver. Anyone know?

I believe that Federal laws on tandem trailers only pertain to federal property such as National Parks; everything else is under state laws. Some states allow it (most, but not all of the western states) some don’t. The ones that do sometime have length limits and like it was said above some counties have laws against it.
We have had several wildland fires in the last couple of years started by trailers and towed vehicles being pulled with a flat tire until the rim was on the ground throwing sparks every where. I would worry unless I could see it.

MIMF is right. Don't do it. Remember, trailer hitches on a Montana are a chassis warranty problem.

I pulled a double jetski trailer behind my 2000 2850RK for 5 summers and am pulling a single jetski trailer behind my 2005 2980RL going on my second summer with no worries. I will say I'm only talking 1100# at the most here with approx 80# to 100# tounge weight. I copied the hitch design off one of our competitors ... HitchHiker. DO NOT MAKE A HITCH OUT OF YOUR SEWER LINE STORAGE TUBE if you have one!!I would shy away from towing a full sized boat or one of the smaller SUV's. Most of the States west of the Misissippi allow a 65' total length. Check this site out for hopefully some good info http://www.towingworld.com/articles/TowingLaws.htm

seems like there are two discussions
1) is it legal
2) should you do it with a Montana
Answers
1) it depends- see the chart
2) not in the warranty period
after that, use your good judgement
Dave
PS: I am still wondering about those one wheel numbers.

Dave,
I used to tow my Harley with a swivel wheel trailer (one wheel)behind my Cardinal 5vr. All states view this unit as a separate trailer. The configuration is termed triple-towing (no, I don't know why).
The best thing about it is that this "third thing" will not jack knife, and allows easy backing. There are also some less good things.
1) the tongue weight ends up being about 35% of total load - a combined trailer and load of 1000# will put about 350# on the 5th wheel rear end connection.
2) since it is rigidly connected to the 5ver rear-end, it will swing out into adjacent lanes when turns are made. You must be careful or you will take out the guy next to you.
3) you almost always forget that the single wheel is traveling down the center of the lane. You think you just did a great job steering over that cinder block in the middle of your lane only to (too late) realize that your swivel wheel just center-punched it right before being torn off!
If you're careful and up to it, I have a great one I have up for sale - at a good price!

Rick,
Thanks for the input. Think I rule out the single wheel answer.

E. Sven, I will go along with the pros on this one. Not a good idea to tow a trailer behind a Montana.
