Saw Gas Pumps with $0.249 and $0.269 Today

I was walking along and came upon two fuel pumps with Regular Gas for 24.9 cents a gallon, and Ethyl for 26.9 cents a gallon. It was amazing. It brought back memories of the good old times.

When I was 15 my cousin had his license and a car. He would call me up and ask me how much money I had. I'd check, and most of the time I'd have my allowance, 50 cents. He would tell me he had the same and said, "If we both put a quarter in the tank, we could go for a ride." You bet! At 15 cents a gallon (gas war - remember them) we could ride all night long and we still had money for a hot dog and a drink at the drive in. The year? 1956!

Today, I was at Graceland and I was walking in the Automobile Museum. That is where I saw the gas pumps.

My bubble got busted when I stopped at Love's and filled up with diesel for $4.599 a gallon.

Oh how I yearn for the good old times.

Yep, me, too. When I started driving, gas was .19 cents a gallon. When I got out of the Army in '70, it was .27 cents, and I remember thinking then that the world had gone crazy. Of course, they still had a guy pump it for you, and gave you a set of glasses or something if you filled up.

Looks like we are all telling our ages. As a teenager with my first car, I rarely ever put in more than a dollars worth, and that was over 4 gallons. We could cruise the strip 2-3 nights on that. A rare fill-up took 3 to 4 dollars.

before I started driving, I'd ride around with my dad ocasionally. When he pulled into a gas station, he'd tell the guy, "5 regular". I asked him one time how the attendant knew if he wanted five gallons, or five dollar's worth.

He replied, "A car won't hold five dollar's worth of gas, son."

Times sure have changed!
