Here we go again....

I was working on covering and venting both of my golf cart batteries, looked up and saw the Two bolts, one each side, that pin the square tubes together for the drive on the landing gear.
These bolts and nuts have to be really short, or one side won't clear the motor. It will be a good idea to have Two spares in the baggie with the slide bolts. It wouldn't be good to not have them, as your landing gear depends on them, and the local hardware store wouldn't have a short one like that. We will have to cut them to size.
I'll pull one and get the measurements posted.

OK, heres the information, I was wrong, I think this is an off the shelf, (or bin) item;
Landing gear screw info:
7/16” socket for the nut, ¼” cap screw, 1 ½” long, 3/16” allen wrench head.

I'm not to sure there's a problem with those, no torque on them that I can see. It looks like they just keep the square tube from sliding off the square drive.

Socket head capscrews are even stronger than Grade 8 capscrews. I have never had a problem with landing gear drive parts and don't anticipate having any.

Here is a little trick if you cut off a bolt to shorten it: Run a nut down on the threads past your cut line before you cut off the bolt. Once the bolt is cut off, then remove the nut. The nut acts like a "thread-chaser" and cleans up the threads so you can re-start the nut later.

Good tip, Tom. Yea, it's frustrating to have the cut end not accept a nut.

Took a look at that bolt and drive assembly. There was a post on this forum or another forum of that happening but I think it had to do with the drive motor seizing and I believe that square tube is the drive..Don't think it is a high risk issue but a couple of bolts and nuts are cheap insurance.

On cutting bolts, if you have a small grinding wheel, You hold the bolt vertical over the vertical wheel, head up and the cut end grinding down on a 45 degree angle. Turn the bolt or stud as you grind it until you do a complete pass around the bolt. Because the wheel is turning down on the threads and making them smaller, your cut becomes just like a new bolt and your nut will spin freely on.

Spinning a nut on works if you are only doing a couple of fasteners but it can leave a sharp edge that will tear your finger open. I get jobs where I am cutting redi rods or studs in large numbers and grinding them is easier and faster and will not leave a jagger for the next guy to cut his finger on.

I retract my earlier post. I looked at mine, it may be a square drive but it is a very loose fit. The fastener on mine was loose, not even finger tight, it may not need to be either of course.

What struck me was the nut having no thread sealer, no lock washer, and the shaft is a drive off the motor.
Like Rich said, it's cheap insurance.
