5th wheel tool box

Wondering if any fellow MOC personnel own or have tried the Westin Brute pro series v-shaped tool box? I am feeling the need for storage of tools and necessities needed while traveling with Camper attached to the pickup. This particular box is accessible from the rear of the truck with camper attached and also when detached and bed cover is unrolled. My question to anyone that may have this box is that I was wanting to make sure that when making turns is there plenty of space between the 5th wheel and the toolbox. Without interference. I’m sure there is but just want to hear it from an experienced traveler that has same setup.

I don't have one, but you won't be able to unhitch from the trailer from any angle but near parallel (truck and trailer lined up). The back end of the pin box will collide with the toolboxes when you are pulling away. You might be able to lift it over in that case, but that's a negative for me. I often unhook at an angle.

Honestly. This may sound dumb. But I really have no idea. I haul camper with 2017 Chevy Silverado duramax. I know I should know the answer to your question but shamefully I do Not. UGH.....

Jet skier. Good call on that one. I never really thought about that. However the toolbox is only 19” deep and and I think it should have enough room to unlatch at an angle. Probably not a 90 degree. I guess that’s why I am throwing this post out there. Thanks for input.

Box is great but its for gooseneck trailers only. Pin boxes will not work. I have that box on my work truck

Plus if you use your truck for anything other than pulling your fiver ... that toolbox mounted near rear of bed would kill loading anything large into the bed like say a lawnmower, generator, or tiller.

Thanks

I appreciate all the insight. Glad I asked. Need to go a different route I’m thinking. I was liking the easy access to things from the rear of the truck and while still hooked to rig. The front storage in the box seems to be a pain to reach From outside the box. I’ll keep investigating. Thanks again

A short step stool will aid in accessing the tool box mounted behind the cab.

Like Bob said, a step stool will help. I got a tire step to help with hitching and unhitching since my F350 sits so high. I'm getting too old to climb up on the tire all the time. The step basically has a frame and hangs over the tire. Here's one on Amazon for comparison...https://www.amazon.com/Extreme-Max-5...%2C172&sr=8-11
It also helps with checking the oil in the front. I'm 5'11" and I can barely reach the dipstick.

Since my knees have told me that they ain't what they usta be (skiing too many years), been carrying a low end one of these to get in and out of my truck's bed as well as access that item just beyond my reach from the sides. I tried my regular step stool but this kind works better for me:

All the 1 tons are high in the rear. I us a 3 foot ladder to pin my hitch. I am 5' 10" and as my wife tells me I am short on one end.

Im using the better built SLE.

Wait for them to put them on a discount, black friday is coming up ya know.

https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...er-gloss-black

Low profile and can still access it when the toneau is covering the bed.

I also use the step stool from amazon, and when needed I made a tool to reach in and un-pin the hitch handle so I dont have to dig anything out, or climb up on the tire.

CHILLIN--247......that tool box is an accident waiting to happen. i use one from Northern tool that sits below the truck body.....this way it doesn't advertise tools for free..and has plenty of hitch clearance

This is the stool I use. Keep it in the back of the truck along the side up by the cab (black thing beside the gas cans).

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Folding-Step-Stool/38437780

Cheap enough to not flip out if some body steals it. Also works to wash the windshield.

I also like a toolbox that sits below the rails. Wife found it cheap on Facebook Marketplace.

It is. And at times it still feels like it's not enough. When we're loaded up the bed is pretty much covered from front to back. I keep all my hoses, wheel chocks, step ladder, leveling blocks, folding table, power cable and teak wood door mat behind the 5th wheel.

The upside down tub covers our Predator 3500 generator. Stole the idea for using the tub off another RVer forum.

My Ram (Tradesman trim) has storage boxes in the floor of rear foot well and a lot of storage under rear seat. That and occasionally I have used one of the HD Black plastic boxes behind the cab. You can get the boxes in a size that is just slightly lower than the bed rails and they have hinged lid. Granted they are not easy to get into (particularly hitched) but it is a lot cheaper than the metal ones.

On a related note, our 381TH has the perfect storage compartment on the side rear. You can fit a middle tool box in it. Maybe even two, depending on length. That is where I organize my tools and parts for the RV. Between that and what I normally carry on the truck, I usually have what I need.

I have to admit if I carried EVERYTHING I wanted to the rig would collapse under the weight LOL. Yes I am a tool hog. So I have learned to just carry what I need for common emergency repairs....
