Heat Pump freeze up

Woke up this morning to 'rain' coming out of the ceiling at the intake ducts for the heat pump. Most of the water was leaking from the firing strip joining the rear most 2 ceiling panels. Heat pump is model 9630-756. After putting out collection devices I went on the roof and opening up the unit (removed cover, opened chamber where controller is, in front of the coils) and found larger ice blocks formed in front of the coils.

Does anybody know what is going on and more important, how to prevent it. DW is deathly afraid of mold (allergies) so if anyone has any suggestions for drying the space inside the ceiling, I would be grateful.

Maybe check the duct work for obstructions/good air flow.
Run the fan on high in high humidity environments.
Check your AC unit to see if it is affected by the TSB regarding drain pan leak

For drying out your ceiling, I would put a vacuum on the rear attic mushroom cap vent to draw air through the attic to dry it out as fast as possible.
OR cut the top and bottom out of a box, place it over the vent then lay a fan over the top to draw air through to dry the attic out. This would probably work better since you will need to let it run for days.

Consider getting a dehumidifier for the camper

Thanks but that is not the heat pump installed on our unit.

Problem solved. The freeze guard had become dislodged from the coils. It was laying in the bottom of the control section (small white wire with a sensor attached). The sensor is supposed to be inserted into the coils full depth. When it was made in the factory the spot chosen by the assembler to place the sensor hit on the coil lines keeping it from going in full depth. The tech guessed it vibrated out.

Another item to check while doing periodic maintenance.

Now to keep drying the ceiling and put the trim piece back up.

This white wire going to the coils.
Thanks for sharing the fix. Something to add to the troubleshooting checklist.

Sorry picture is upside-down
