No Disc Brakes
We have a 3121 Legacy on order and just received a call from the dealer saying that Keystone will not be unable to install the disc brakes due to lack of supply. The dealer is being told no disc brakes because of the military??? Kinda weird but with all the ongoing supply chain issues I guess nothing surprise's me at this point. They are giving a 2,200.00 credit.
Anyone else heard anything?
Any suggestions on aftermarket kits to install disc brakes?

Electric drum brakes appear to be standard https://www.rvusa.com/rv-guide/2022-...3121rl-tr53213. That is what we have on our 2020 Montana 3780RL and in 18 years never had disc brakes on any of my fifth wheel trailers. Would you consider and is it possible to install disc brakes aftermarket if the manufacturer cannot?
Do a search on this forum to see what others have converted to like this one https://www.montanaowners.com/forums...highlight=disc

Disc brakes are one of the more common after market upgrades available. Many shade tree mechanics tackle as a DIY task. There are many mobile brake installers as well some have been mentioned many times on the forum in other threads. I don't believe that I have ever read an MOC thread where someone installed disc brakes and regretted it.

Try https://performancetrailerbraking.com/disc-brakes. They installed mine 2 years ago and gone cross country twice with no issues.

We had the same call today on the 3121 Legacy we ordered. Looks like we might be using the same dealer, since it looks like we are in the same general area. Wonder if other dealers are giving out the same news?
I'm hoping there is a good aftermarket solution that isn't too expensive.

Hey thanks for responding. Well I guess it's good to know that the dealer wasn't making an excuse. We are purchasing through A&S in Auburn Hills. Not sure I understand why something like disc brakes are not available. I was able to locate disc brake kits on two different web sites today. The disc brakes were one of the features we liked about the package so I guess I will be putting them on after we get it.

I believe what you are saying. I don't believe what Keystone is telling you. At least the part about lack of supply. Unless they are talking about their inability to plan ahead for their needs.

Maybe just lack of supply at the price point they negotiated?

I ordered disc brake kit from e trailer. Was informed after I payed for them that there is no inventory. Don’t know if it’s the actuator , calipers, or rotors. At my local Montana dealer the other day and they got a notice from Keystone on the 2-25 -22 on this issue. For my order through etrailer now delivery is after 4-11-22

Just contacted my dealer. Got the same response, but said Keystone is going to stop installing disc brakes on the Montana. My 3121rl is coming with drum brakes but will not be delayed. Thanks for the heads up.

Looks like the Far Eastern country made parts aren't coming through - rotors most likely. As far as calipers - if Kodiak, they are cloned '90s mid sized GM car pieces and quite possibly be from that same Far Eastern country as well

The issue is the supply of the piston that is used in the disc brake actuator.
There are three main brake actuators builders: Hydrastar, Dexter, Kodiak (owned by Dexter). Montana uses both brands.
Montana was informed that until further notice actuators would not be supplied due to a piston manufacturer supply issue. This will impact any trailer built with disc brakes and an actuator: Cargo, flatbed, horse, and RV.
Both actuator companies are looking for alternatives. There is no solution at this time.
No one at Montana enjoys calling 150 customers and telling them we have no supply.
Montana has secured enough Dexter Gladiator axles in build the units with drum brakes. All dealers have been informed of the situation.
Our team apologizes for the inconvenience. This situation is beyond our control.

Did they lower the price or upgrade something to makeup the price difference?
Disc brakes is the only reason I bought the legacy upgrade

yes, was a 2200.00 credit. From what I can tell so far it looks like it could cost me upwards of 3000.00 to do it my self but I have only looked a little.
Yes the disc brakes was an attractive part of the package.

I did mine myself with a kit from stopyourtrailer.com a couple of years ago for just under $2,000. That price included an upgrade to bigger bearings and larger lug nuts. I suspect inflation has raised that price somewhat, but $3,000 seems high. Of course if none of the suppliers has parts then your pretty much up a creek without a paddle. A $2,200 refund seems very fair to me. Keep in mind that you are getting the money PLUS a set of 4 drum brakes.

Sorry for coming to this month's after you posted, but I have a Montana 3121 2019 model that I've been waiting for a Dexter K715-651-00 brake actuator since February 2022, and am fed up. So I called and spoke to Dexter directly to discover they have absolutely no idea when they can expect to get any of these pumps back in stock. However, on the bright side, I did discover that this actuator doesn't work on GM products factory installed electric brake controllers. I need a K58-036=00 cable to make that work. Those are in stock. I'm hopeful that this will actuate my disk brakes. It seems that the Industry would at least do something when they're putting an OEM product that don't operate properly without an adaptor on specific truck brand, they should be required to at least notify that Buyer in advance of purchase.
