California Trying Generator Ban

According to this article, California is hoping to ban the sale and use of portable generators. https://www.rvtravel.com/legislation...ers-rvt-1029b/
Glad we’re doing the desert this winter.

Unfortunately, the only people who can resolve this issue and change the appropriate legislation are the people who have residence in California. For the rest of the country, thank-you for sharing this bit of information. For those who boom-dock, this is priceless information.

I don’t know that generators are the included. Looks more like they’re going after lawn equipment. I wrote contracts in my last job and “definitions” are key.

Everyone play nice and don’t get too political or slam California. The draft proposal specifically says “new” small engines produced after “January 1, 2024".

Relax, enjoy your day.

Curious if California can over rule federal regulations?

Not overrule but any state can make regulations tougher than Fed code. They just cannot make them weaker than Fed code.

First, this bill was introduced in Feb and has not passed. Second, it has the wiggle words "adopt cost-effective and technologically feasible regulations to prohibit engine exhaust and evaporative emissions from new small off-road engines,". Third, it acknowledges a problem with "Expected availability of zero-emission generators and emergency response equipment." (a huge issue for emergency response teams), and lastly, it bans SALES of new equipment in CA if, and when, it takes effect. You may continue to use any existing equipment you have despite the new potential regulations.

Thanks, Carl. I know some members are already having trouble with finding generators in California. The article in rvtravel made it sound like no generators at all.

There is not a generator shortage in CA. HD and Lowes stocks them on the shelves! Costco's even sell them! Small lawnmower shops also have them. Not sure where people are getting their info from?

The law is set to take affect in the near future. Not a current shortage. Besides, it's CA. I would have believed it even without reading about the law.

Just put in a generator in our house in CA this year, there is no shortage, as a matter of fact it's recommended to have one in case of power outages.

Even if they do ban their sale (like other things), it's a short trip to Oregon, Nevada or Arizona.

"Bans sales of new equipment..."

I see a (black) market opportunity for some.

I expect the commercial stuff (and generators) will eventually get emissions and residential will go lithium powered. I graduated from high school in Southern California and remember well the yellow smog blanket over the LA basin that would burn your eyes and back of your throat . If the wind was right would make it all the way to the San Jacinto/Gorgonio pass.

California's long term goal is to do away with the use of all fossil fuels. This small engine deal is just one more facet. Other larger issues are well in progress to their goal. It will affect RVing before you know it.

Lots of Californians will be buying their lawn mowers, leaf blowers, snow throwers, etc in Nevada and Oregon when the law goes into effect.

Folks like to slam california
Cant say its not sometimes deserved but not always.
I recently purchased a generator after experiencing a extended power failure in socal due to a Edison eq failure issue… Harbor freight was fully stocked and purchasing a genny was not difficult At all… they had plenty of stock.. yes just like electric cars things may change in the future but i don't see generators going away….

Ron ( Rames14) might be using me as the person having a problem finding a CALIFORNIA LEGAL honda EU2200I generator, and for those dismissing his statement, you might be right, but find me a EU2200I california legal generator, please. Unless my google fu is bad, they aren't available, and verified by all the Honda sales companies within 100 miles of me plus online searches. One nearby dealer had told me Honda is pulling out of the California market due to CARB laws. And I asked to email me when one is in stock, doubt he'd make that up vs making a sale when they might show up.

I was told directly by Honda, about a week after calling the local Honda dealers, that they got 200 california units in the USA. I found one at Camping world and ordered it, the next day Sportsmans Warehouse had them, I put it in my cart and the next day they AND camping world sold out!

3 days ago I went to my local ( stockton) Honda-Yamaha motors dealer ( on the way home from getting propane), and asked where their generators were as they were not on the floor. Guy said he has a few California generators in the back on a pallet and Honda contacted them and said to not sell them. They said they would send a truck to come get them soon. He inquired why as he had a list of folks on a wait list, they told him ( or actually he told me) that Honda messed up and got caught, labeling non -ca smog ok units and selling them as CARB COMPLIANT, while they were not . I located Plenty of 49 state models online, Nobody would ship to California, some even online carts refused to complete the order due to my location!

Not sure if the dealer was correct, but it doesn't surprise me. I've been on an "email when available" for a honda water pump for 3 months, based on the first reports of the above law their interpretation was generators and pumps will be restricted, and I am going to order a pump and fire it up ( to make sure it doesn't have COVID ASSEMBLY and probably store it, or resell it after the law changes, lol.

No argument, just facts.
