2017 Superduty

Was at the Ford dealer this morning for an oil change, so I walked out to look at the new 2017 Superdutys. Could not believe how high the rear is. They have exceeded the point I could tow my trailer without putting a lift kit on it as I am already slightly nose high. They had 20" wheels, but so does my 2012 F350 SRW, and these trucks were much taller than mine. My Monte is a 2007, but I think this may be a problem for newer trailers also unless the new trailers are also getting taller.

That is the issue when you only look at 4x4 trucks. I'm not towing up a dirt/mud farm road so I see no need to go to a four wheel drive unit. Guess you will have to buy one and do a low rider job to it. John

Exactly why I tow with a 2016 DRW 4X2 Super Duty to keep the truck down and the front of the Montana lower

Here in north TX where we typically have snow/ice no more than once or twice a year for no more than a couple days each time, it is almost impossible to find a 4x2 except in basic XL/XLT work trucks. Anything from Lariat up on dealer lots is almost always going to be a 4x4, SRW or DRW. It would be a matter of taking what you can find, but may not be exactly what you want. Or order exactly what you want in a 4x2 and wait 8 weeks or so for delivery. I have ordered new years ago, but not my preference. But then, I don't have any plans to buy a new one anytime soon anyway.

I do occasionally drive thru muddy pasture roads to our hunting cabin. Have made it before in a 4x2 with limited slip. But just barely. And actually got stopped a little short at the incline up toward the cabin. Current 4x4 makes that easier. But have never used 4 wheel while towing.

4WD is a must for us. I am curious about the aluminum bed based on the commercials GM is running and cost of body work if a bump and crunch happens.

It's a Chevy add. GM don't show you what happens in a hailstorm. The 20 inch tires and the 18s are the same diameter within 3/8 inch.

GM will probably not be running that ad next year when they supposedly come out with their aluminum body. Typical opportunistic marketing spin (why should the politicians have all the fun?).

And who in their right mind would dump rock like that?

Interesting on that toolbox drop. They zoom in for a closeup of the Ford, but a distant shot from behind of the Chevy. ?? But I have had pickups since the 60's, hauled a lot of tools, furniture, lumber, landscape stones, etc. in most of them, and have barely scraped the paint in any of them, never any dents of any consequence. Later ones have had spray in liners. Not something I am much concerned about.

4x4 vs 4x2 I go 4x4 every time. Besides the Midwest snows when I am not towing, the sand and loose soil at many of the lesser developed ca,P grounds has me firmly in the traction camp. Had I not had four wheel drive this past weekend, I would not have made it in or out of an absolutely gorgeous campsite on the shores of Lake Superior.

Exactly why we also are 4WD must have people. We have been in the same boat you described numerous times. Is an expensive option.

4x4 has come in handy in loose stone/hilly CG'so. Also helps in mid-Atlatic winters. I don't think I'd buy a 4x2 truck...even if just for fair weather towing.

I'm on my 6th pick up, second dually. Never seen a need for 4wd, thus never had one and never been stuck. Pulling a 5th wheel is even more reason not to have 4wd...if the weather is bad, we don't go.

Here in Oregon, I don't think you can find a 4x2. There is a campground we go to that is all on grass. They are always watering and when I back up into our favorite spot I spin the back wheels and have to put it in 4x4 to get into spot. I can see you people in the south not needing a 4x4, but in the NW most all trucks sold are 4x4 in the 250,350, 2500, 3500 models.

4X4 is not that much more money than 4X2 and one can get a better price when selling it. Plus enjoying having the extra power to the ground with the 4X4. Again JMHO.

I've had both 2X4 and 4X4 like most people here. I've never really needed the 4X4 except to cool my transmission while going up a very long steep grade on a gravel road. The road is the Union Pass road in Dubois WY. You top out at 9300 feet. Using low range will cool your transmission. I will also use low range for is creeping over rough terrain. Something most people wouldn't do anyway.

I live in Northern New England so a 4x4 is a must, as far as loading stuff in the back bed, buy pallet load of stone or heating pellets at Lowes or HD and you'll wish your bed was made of Titanium.

What mlh said. My previous truck was a 1999 F250 SD. One weekend taking the grandkids camping in South Texas (summer) had to jockey the rig up about a 30 degree grade multiple times to get in to the site. Overheated and burned up the transmission but still limped home. Expensive repair. Now with my 2015 w/4wd I just put it in low and creep up the grade in forward or reverse-no muss, no fuss.
