The strange things you see when traveling

Part of the reason we are on the road
Neat trip from Havasu to Palm Springs.

Drove that road maybe 100 times and I still love the view coming down into the valley.
What Park are you staying in.

Growing up a northern boy, the first thought when I saw that picture was "What a great toboggan run if it snowed."

Our first trip here, it is amazing! Dick, I am still thinking they need to insulate all these exposed water lines
We are at Caliente Springs RV Park, I guess it is in Desert Hot Springs, it all looks the same to me. We haven't been out yet. Sue and I had to shoe-horn the RV into this tight corner lot, she doesn't think we will be able to get it back out...

Is this the same Ozz who told me several years ago (while parked in Lake Havasu) there was no way he would ever go into California with all those crazy drivers? I guess the old Ozz has mellowed just a touch?

The part about the drivers is still correct...
also, they must not sell a pick-up truck without a lift kit.

Great time of year to tour Joshua Tree but get a VERY early start. I like coming in from the southeast entrance (East on I-10 about 40 miles) then take Cottonwood Spring Road into the Joshua Tree. It's a big place and gets dark early. I highly recommend stopping at the self-guided tour spots for up close views of the plant life - beware of the Cholla (pronounced choy-ya).

I've stayed at the Sands Resort. It was nice. We've stayed at other resorts in the area, but now as members of 1000 trails we stay there (it's not great, it's old, it's somewhat cramped, but it's free) and we still get to go all over that part of California.

Other things to do that are nature or scenery related are the Palm Springs Tram (don't forget the very warm clothing, it's about 10,000 ft high and will be very cold this time of year) and I also like the Palm Springs Living Desert (it's a zoo and gardens). I recall a few unusual animals I had never even heard of but it's been a few years since we were there.

I love those roads too! There are a few like it. It's much of the reason we prefer driving during the day to flying ANY TIME. We've done these roads at night and it's kinda surreal especially when oncoming headlights appear and disappear from view.

btw - that last picture in the slideshow of the drop into the Palm Springs area, there are many other towns in the area. What you are seeing is called the Coachella Valley. You might know the name from the Bugs Bunny cartoons and includes Palm Desert, Indio and many other places that just run into each other just like you described. There are so many golf courses in the area, they have helped to contribute to significant climate changes that are endangering the local fauna and flora.

Stay safe Ozz, but keep having fun! We're loving the pictures of your adventures.

Ron and Rose, we thought about it, but with Sue's breating problems, the dust and smoke would be a foolish gamble for her to take. I know it would be fun, and I really want to see everyone, I love my little co-pilot.

Don, that is on my list! Thanks for the tip, I shall heed it.
Art, we ventured into town (Palm Springs) today, we went to the visitors center at the base of the Tram access road, I think we will pass on the Tram, Sue doesn't like to look down from heights, and I can do without it also, we like other things about the area, good food, a visit to the wind farm, Joshua Tree, and the scores of activities here at the park. I am joining the Disaster preparedness team. (San Andreas Fault is here somewhere...)Thank you for the tips.
I also want to see if I can offer some of my skills to help the community out somehow???

Don is right, it`s The Living Desert on Portola in Palm Desert. It`s about one mile south of HWY 111.
Worth going too, you might also enjoy Pioneer Town in Yucca Valley.

There are some neat hiking areas at the base of the mountains. It is native american territory and I can't remember the name of the park/hike. I am sure there is lots of info. Also a tour of the date farms and a date shake!! We shared one (kind of sweet). I think it is Thursday evening that they close the main street in Palm Springs for the street fair/farmer's market. They also have a museum in Palm Springs which will give you great history of the area. Have fun.. it is one of our favorite areas.

This is approximately where, when I was just about 18 years old, heading down hill, I saw blue lights in my rear view mirror. When I looked at the speedometer, I was doing over 110 mph. It took over a mile to slow down. After a night in the local lock-up, I decided that speeding wasn't all that it was cracked up to be!

Jim and Sue, you are just getting started! And you are doing it the right way, taking the US and state highways and really seeing this country. Now you understand why we are still on the road, after almost nine years. And there are many here who have been doing this far longer than we have.

Steve, when we were on this secondary road, I thought of you guys. I remember you talking about this style of travel.
You are a wise man, my friend!

In 1965, while 16 years old and still in high school and while chauffeuring her mother on a trip, my dear wife got a speeding ticket for doing something over 100 mph in just about that same spot. The ticket cost her $10. I think maybe she smiled at the officer.
