Frozen water lines
Wow,
My water lines inside were frozen this morning, so no water when I got up at 6am. It did not get quite as cold last night either, only got down to 6 degrees, wind chill and all.
So I bundled up and went out side to check that I had water to the unit and I did, so I came back inside and pulled the drawers out from under the desk, which exposes the water lines where they come in to the trailer and stuck a heat gun down in there, as luck would have it after about 30 minutes, I had water again!
Funny thing is I had the furnace turned up the highest I have ever had, it was set at 76 degrees, because of the wind last night.
Anyway it all worked out thankfully! Just thought I would post something about my experience rather than always asking questions of everyone!

Now you know the trick. Under conditions such a yours we open the doors near the plumbing to let a little heat in.

Wind is the key factor. As Charlie said opening the drawers is the first step if that doesn't fix it putting a light bulb in the area should. By the way this isn't just an RV issue. Many of us who lived in areas where you could get 0 degree temps and serious winds have had to do similar things with a stick house. Several places I've lived in Kansas we needed to open the doors under the kitchen sink at night to keep the water there from freezing.

Thank you for your reply. I have been worried about the water hydrant and the water line to my trailer, I never thought it would freeze inside, but obviously I learn something last night.

On a 2008 3400RL is there any cabinet or any other area I could leave open to provide additional heat to my water lines?

If the layout is similar to the 3402 they're producing today and I felt the need, I'd prop open the doors under the sinks, both kitchen and bedroom/bath at night. They wouldn't have to be open all that much, but IMHO it's letting cold air out to be replaced with warmer air that does it so it only needs room to flow out. That is, of course until the wind and cold makes it necessary to add a light bulb.

Many people read lots of posts and either do not have any input or don't have the problem addressed in the post. I read many posts and don't respond for the reasons noted...but it is no bother and I enjoy reading about the various issues other RVers have.

Since you have a 2013 unit I am presuming you have the vents into the basement storage area to send a little warmer air into the basement. Make sure this vent/s are not blocked with items in the basement and the air flow will help with you problem also! Since we have an older unit(2004) we don't have those vents or any in the floor of the bathroom either and the idea of a small heater an incandescent light bulb on a trouble like also works. Just make sure there is nothing up against the heater or bulb to overheat and create a fire! Good luck and good travels!

I forgot to mention that. When we were still camping in the cold I burrowed a couple of drill bits from a friend in the HVAC business and cut three extra holes in the ductwork running thru the basement. I spaced them out and used both sides, the holes were about the size of a quarter.

Big Dave,
We leave our kitchen faucet with the water running a little faster than a drip at night. Of course, make sure your drain is open in the sink and gray water tank. Also leave the cabinet doors open under both sinks. We also insulate the outside faucet and heat tape and wrap the water hose. I also put insulation in the convience center. We're near Vancouver Wa that set a new record low of 8 degrees last night!

The water hydrant is insulated and heat taped, also I bought one of those hoses that is guaranteed down to -45, but I froze up last night just inside the convenience center wall on the trailer side. S it is supposed to start warming up this week.
I never had a problem last winter but it did not get as cold and stay as cold as this winter.

Leaning to full time in cold weather is more like trying to take a 25 mph curve at 90 mph. This forum can go a long ways toward straightening that curve out a little...

If it doesn't warm up in the daytime remember one thing to watch for - you can, a little at a time, freeze the sewer line closed. I did it in a mobile home we lived in in Wichita many years ago. Caused a big mess inside when a toilet overflowed and was a whale of a lot of fun going under there, cutting out the frozen part (it also cracked) and then lying in the stuff that came down from inside the trailer while I replaced the pipe. As you can imagine, after that experience I don't let the water drip unless there really is nothing else I can do.

I had to laugh when I read your post, because a guy in the trailer park here did just that, left the water running and then next thing he noticed and or found out when he got home was, his sewer line was froze solid. What a mess!
So I know better than that!
