steps

Has anyone had trouble with their inside steps going up to the bedroom making a lot of noise? Mine squeak so loud they wake my wife up if I use them in the middle of the night.

Mine squeak pretty loudly too. I chalked it up to the tread being so tight against the walls that they squeak when I walk on them. They have moved and rubbed some of the wall paper and caused it to crinkle at the step treads.

After a bit - I just don’t notice the squeak. It’s an RV not a house on a slab. I don’t think you can do anything to stop the squeak. Based on the little bit I know about how the stairs are constructed - it would be a big project to rebuild them. The squeak would probably re-appear after several thousands of travel miles and associated earthquake travel shaking and vibrating. If you store the unit when not in use - the inside of the RV gets up to 115* expanding the wood treads, and down to 20* contracting the wood treads. I think silencing the squeak is a lost cause.

Several years ago, I had to rebuild our steps. Seems the screws used to connect to the aluminum studs were all broken, so no good support.

I drew this sketch for another “steps” thread topic a few months ago. It gives you the basics for how the steps are situated.

Maybe remove the step covers. Reinforce the structure underneath using screws and wood glue on the joints.
They are probably put together with staples which will work loose over time and squeak.

I feel your pain on this topic. With my hearing I never paid attention to the squeaks, but it drove my wife crazy. About 4 years ago we looked it over and did a little structural remodeling on the interior bedroom steps.
In the pass through basement, the steps above fall within the enclosed area where our inverter, Hot water heater, water pump, etc are hidden. Above where the steps are, we removed the wooden vent panels for the steps and drilled a hole through the wooden subflooring and found the hole in the area below in the hidden section of the basement. This area was completely clear of any items and that sparked the following idea.
We placed 2 each treated 2x4s in this area evenly spaced below the flooring supporting the steps and then placed 2 more treated 2x4s next to those just installed and screwed them together making them into 4x4 posts. Each piece of wood was toe-nailed into the subflooring of the rig above and the basement using pocket hole screws.
We then added 3 each 2x4 treated wood supports under each step and toe nailed then in as well using pocket hole screws. This was made easy by using a Milwaukee 90 degree drill.
The end result for us is a completely sturdy and squeak free walk way from the living area to the bedroom.
Ours is an older rig (2011 Montana 3580RL) and I'm not sure how this would work on the new ones. Hope it helps to provide an idea at least and good luck on keeping your wife happy!

Why are there 2 vents on the steps if you only need 1 return air

The furnace manufacturers require a minimum size air return capacity, so the trailer manufacturer installs at least the minimum amount of vent area, so this is why you have vents on both risers of the steps.

I have had 2 rigs since 2006 and don't recall squeaking at any time. Maybe I am just lucky!
