Disinfecting Water System

Question to those who use a filter and water softener systems.

Do put your disinfectant in upstream or downstream from the water softener system?

Thanks

Never injected a disinfectant in 16 years of trailering a fifth wheel, 2 years living on / motoring a motor yacht and living on / sailing our sailboat.

We also have a 48' motor Yacht where water systems need cleaning since they are hard to completely drain and we not not use city water like you would on a RV (city water pressure sinks boats). With that said we sanitize the water system annually with Bleach, we do the same to our RV every year after de winterizing. It is very easy to do

To sanitize the water system use a quarter cup of household bleach for every fifteen gallons of water your fresh water tank holds. Mix the bleach, with water, into a one-gallon container and pour it into the fresh water holding tank. Fill the fresh water tank almost completely full of potable water.

Turn the water pump on, open all hot and cold faucets and run the water until you smell the bleach at each faucet. Close the faucets. If it’s possible drive the RV or pull the trailer so the water can move around to assist in cleaning the entire tank. Let it sit for at least 12 hours. Drain the entire system again and re-fill the fresh water tank with potable water. Open all of the faucets and run the water until you no longer smell any bleach.

It may be necessary to repeat this process again to eliminate all signs of bleach from the water system. Once this is done it is safe to use your water system.

To often RV parks use wells for their water supply or the water system is old you never know what you are getting in terms of water quality. This is such a simple process there is NO reason not to sanitize your water system. I was a water district manager for our small community with that came a lot of awareness about water quality and the impact of bad water.

Frankly it is negligent not to sanitize from time to time.

We do not drink the water however you still ingest while showering. External filters help but does not prevent critters from growing in a stagnent water tank since your water system is not a sealed unit.

...wouldn’t hurt to run it through the filter and water system...?
