My neighbor caught s skunk and said it can't spray if it can't get it's tail up in the air. He used live catch traps that are only maybe 10-12 inches square and a couple of feet long.

Ya that's the same type trap I used. Funny story! Caught skunk, thought long and hard about what to do next........cut two eye holes in 10x10 blue tarp, covered myself with said tarp, crept very slowly to the trap to open the door and release the skunk, blue tarp monster scared the crap out of the skunk and poof! I didn't note tail up or down....
