Traveling to Canada -- Sault Ste Marie

It looks like we'll be headed to the "da UP" this July, to Hancock, MI, followed by a trip to Canada to Sault Ste Marie. I know not to take my weapons into Canada and to get insurance rider for vehicles, anything else to be aware of? Any recommendations on where to stay in that area?

Thanks.

Limit the amount of Booze you have on board. The Duty is more than it's worth.

You mean any already opened booze in our cabinets is subject to import duty?

We stayed at a KOA just outside town. It was nice if I remember correctly. The one thing I DO remember - I got propane filled and Canada apparently has a law and they do not blead any propane into the air while filling the tank. I would think that would prevent getting the tank completely full, but that is what they do.

We always stay at Glenview Cottages. They have campsites.

Depends on where you cross, but generally any and all booze counts. Know of folks who had to have all partial bottles looked at to determine how much was in each.

If your looking for a nice campground north of Hancock, I highly recommend Fort Wilkins state park in Copper Harbor. Very nice asphalt pull through sites, with 50 amp service, and trees between each site. Lots to see, Brockway mountain trail, Lake Superior shoreline, Fort Wilkins is open to tour and attached to the park. I work in Sault Ste Marie Michigan, and we either need a passport or an enhanced Michigan liscence to cross the bridge to Canada. A few people at work live in Canada and cross every day. I can ask them about what they allow if you like.

You probably don't need any special Rider on your insurance but call you agent.

Go to Cooper harbor from Hancock...eat at the German restaurant when the isle Royale ship comes back from the island...neat.

As for the Soo, just enjoy and go into Canada..you didn't say where

Check Canadian Border crossing regulations.
This is a hot topic on RVing to Alaska 2019
Lots of things to consider if taking 5er over.
Pets seem to be a confusing topic !

The infIormation we had when traveling to Alaska stated we needed copies of our prescriptions. I got them, but they were never requested. Probably depends on the port of entry. Also, make sure all prescriptions are in the original container.

Have fun.

Heading to Canada

It’s pretty much the same getting back into the USA as it is getting into Canada. Actually sometimes the US is very particular about meats and citrus. Pets can be an issue going both ways. Make sure to have all health records. If you can try to make it to Algonquin Provincial park - bit of a Canadian treasure. Booze prices are much much higher but the US dollar to Cdn dollar exchange rate helps a ton. Be sure to change your odometer to metric. Basically all major highways are 100 km/h or 60 mph.

I grew up near the Soo. Don’t forget the Mackinac Bridge in St. Ignace, 50 miles south.

Saulte camp grounds

If you are an Elks member, there is a rv facility on the USA side you can stay. There is also a county campground on the USA side that is along the waterway. Three recommendations, take the small boat tour through the locks on both sides. Take a side trip to Macinaw Island, several campsites in Macinaw area after the bridge, or make it a day trip there. Airplane museum on Canadian side. Do not take the train trip on Canadian side, BORING. And one more, lots of mosquito repellant.

Into Canada from US

I know you asked about campgrounds, but we travel into the US and back to Canada several times a year. We live in Canada, just across the border. You must be careful taking booze into Canada . You are allowed 1.14 litre (1 qt US) per person entering Canada. That's hard liquor. Wine, a little more, and I think 24 cans of beer, but I'm not sure of that (I'm a Scotch drinker.) If you are over the limit they MAY make you pay a duty on the excess, and it can be a heavy amount. Don't take the chance.

Going into the US is a much different situation. We always take 3 bottles across (on more than our limit of 2), tell the agent, and are never questioned. Coming back into Canada, we always tell tell agent how much we have, even if we are over, and we usually don't have a problem. Be honest, even if you are over your limit. We often are and it's been OK. but, if you are over your limit and don't tell them (you fudge on the amount you have) and they search your RV and find you are over, you are in big trouble. Just sayin!!!

Always be aware where you park your truck especially if its a dually. There is a huge black market for US diesel trucks, we had ours stolen a few years ago. We also have a few friends that had theres stolen as well, its very lawless in the remote areas & once onto a reservation they are gone. My buddy had his truck & trailer stolen, hooked it with a tow truck. You must notify your insurance company, they will issue you an fs20 for traveling in Ca.

Also if you have an F-350, it is the most stolen vehicle & usually gets shipped right out to the middle east, africa or the Caribbean. We used to like going but its not worth the worry & the police if you can get one are not much help. My guess is a lot of cops & park operators are in on it. If you do go look for vehicle security where you park. Google stolen trucks in Ca, you'll be shocked.
