Driving Thru Yellowstone
We have a 40 foot Montana and one ton dually pickup and want to drive through Yellowstone NP leaving from West Yellowstone, MT driving east on US HWY 20 arriving Cody WY. Is this due able? Is this route full of up and down hills? Would you recommend this route? Thanks for your input.

I would highly recommend it. I've done it many times with my F250 King Ranch long bed and 36 foot Fiver. The Cody Museum is a must see. Plan on about 2 days for that. Enjoy.

I did it 2 years ago in the opposite direction. It has twisting turns and steep inclines, but it is very doable.

A lot of us were just there for the Spring Rally and drove through the park on our way to Jackson or leaving after the rally. The roads are just fine if no construction is going on. The problems are the record amount of people visiting the park, especially this time of the year. Delays can be very lengthy, especially if animals are sighted anywhere near the roads. If possible, travel early before the majority of the tourists get going. We spent 90 minutes going 5 miles while buffalo were crossing the road and everyone had to take pictures. It wasn't any fun anymore going up a couple of hills at 2-3 mph in stop and go traffic pulling 16k lbs!

No problem, just be ready for the traffic and crowds, also don't forget the entrance fee. There is really no other way to get to Cody without an extra couple hundred miles of driving.

Just did it in July from Teton NP to West Yellowstone with our 39 footer. Roads are good with some ups and downs and around but easy going.

I personally, would not take a trailer from Norris, north to Mammoth Hot Springs; too narrow and too many tight turns.
The road from fishing bridge to the east entrance may be closed due to avalanche danger at some times of the year. This was the case when we visited there in 2011 a week before Memorial day.

Get an early start. Less traffic. I was there this year, but I went in with just my truck. I was in before the sun came up, but I was there to take pictures. From the entrance gate to 191/20 junction will be the most traffic. Early not a lot. By time your reach 20, most of the traffic will be heading to Old Faithful. There are some turn outs for viewing, but most where crowded and not big enough with a trailer in tow. When I was leaving the park, the line of cars coming, never seem to stop.

leave early
Was there in Sept.. My advice would be the earlier you get in the park the better. We made it a point to be in the park at or near sunrise...great for animal viewing and traffic was at a minimum. Road to Mammoth was under construction...it was a mess in spots...I felt sorry for those in DP and on motorcycles (have had both) as they sat in line not knowing what was ahead. But as others have said unless you are willing to travel the extra miles to get around the park this is the only option. Grades in the park are no biggie at all.
See ya
