As a "modern era" pilot I would have given anything to fly one of these beauties. Closest I got was a DC6...Only for a short period and no landing, darn it......

You have to admit that they were the sharpest looking bombers during WWII (along with the B-29).

At my age there are some body parts I could do without to fly one of those beauties along with a Mustang.

I had the pleasure of touring both of those beauties back in December. The Sentimental Journey (B-17), was in the maintenance hanger with the in board right side engine off being rebuilt and other items being repaired. I still had the pleasure of being able to get up inside her and look around. Not an easy task as I am 6'6" and I doubt if the B-17 was designed for anyone over 5'10". But it was awesome anyways.

As an Air Force veteran who worked on fighter jets (F-4, F105, F-106) I have to admire those bombers from WWII. My uncle was a gunner on one of those for awhile until he got moved into the OSS.

Thanks for the heads up on this video Mike!
My uncle Lee was a waist gunner on the B-17 (the position just behind the star on the fuselage)

If any of you get to the Savannah, Ga area stop in at The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum in Pooler. It is less than a mile from Camping World. They have restored a B-17 inside the museum as well as the nose of a B-24 Liberator. You should do it in the next year or so as most of the volunteer guides are former crew members and they are getting very old. The tours they give are awesome....
