Skylight shade

My skylight over the shower is 23 5/8 x 16 wide. I called RV ugrades.com and they sell the vent size,14 x 14 and one that is 30 x 23". Does any member have an idea who makes the skylight or were to get a shade to fit.

Have you tried to get some foam from a fabric store and material to cover it, big enough to stay in place just like the vent covers.

Until we come up with a better solution, we made our own (like racerjoe suggested). We cut a piece of 2" foam rubber to fit the skylight. We then covered it with a piece of material we had on hand. Then we hand sewed on the side facing the sky a piece of 1/4" foil coated foam (available by the foot in any hardware store). We put it up and down using velcro. We hand sewed the velcro to the fabric wrapped foam and put the other pieces to the edges of the skylight. It has been a problem keeping the velcro stuck to the edges of the skylight. It keeps the heat and cold out and most important blackens the room for sleeping. We are keeping our eyes open for a better solution, but for now it works. Here's a picture:

Nice idea footloose, nothing worst than a flock of crows or squirrels heckeling me when I'm in the shower. I'll bet it is dark iu there too with that on, which my wife will love very much. thanks for the show-n-tell.

Dick, thanks for the picture, very helpful. What if you use velco say 3 1/2 inches on the frame and 2 inches on the foam and then put a screw through both ends of the frame velco to help hold it onto the frame along with the glue. I just used 2 in. as a referrence. Are you using a longer piece of velco?

Good idea Grooving Grandpa. This is an example of why it is good to brainstorm on the MOC. We tried gluing the velcro to the frame, but the glue came off of the velcro stickum. We've been pushing the velcro back in place and it works, but it isn't a permanent solution. We're looking for a velcro strip that doesn't have the stickum on it and will try to glue again. If that fails, we'll go with your suggestion! Or maybe someone else with come up with a whole different and better idea.

Contact Carefree of Colorado. They have the perfect one...I know because I have one over my shower. Very easy install and pretty much blocks all the light out.

We made a skylight blocker using a lined drapery material measured to fit beyond the outside dimensions of the skylight, sewed a rod pocket on each side and threaded it through screen door springs pulled taut and screwed into the ceiling. It would work better with snaps on the ends instead of the springs. It would be easier to open and close. Otherwise it completely blocks the light and provides some heat/cold insulation as well.

Drop the inner plastic dome and place an opaque cloth between the inner and outer domes. This works if you're not interested in looking at the sky while bathing and if you use a thermal panel of cloth blocks out that annoying morning sunlight and helps keep the interior just that much cooler

Trirboy do you have a picture of yours mounted. Is your sky light the same size as mine. Outside frame to frame 23 5/8 long by 16 wide and the shade is 30" wide by 23" long, the length would be O.K because you just open the to max. I am assuming the 23" is the length that you pull open the shade. However the 30" wide - the 16 in skylight frame, means you must splite the the difference on each side of the frame and mount directly into the ceiling over the existing frame. Is this correct? A picture would be great

Triroy, I just realized you could turn the shade and mount it so what I consider the lenght would be the width and it would 30 " minus 23 5/8 and split the difference. You would only open and close the shade the 16". I think what is confusing the issue is what I am calling the width and lenght measurement and what the manufacture is calling the width and lenght. If you are not confused by my rambleing, I am.

My shower is in the bedroom. I mounted the housing for the shade on the back of the shower on the roof just above the shower head. The catch to hold it closed is on the far side of the skylight and to use it you just pull it like a window shade and attach it to the catch.

I keep my trailer in storage but I'll take a ride over tomorrow and take a couple of pictures.

Way to go MOC-ers!! Lots of good ideas. We'll probably put in the Carefree shade, but keep the foam insert for bistering hot days as it really cuts down on the heat.

This probably isn’t the best way to cover the light coming in from our sky light but this is what I did… I dropped the inside part of the sky light and placed towels in between them and put it back in place. It worked by keeping out the light and heat as well.

We bought one of the foil backed window covers that are made for the trailer door window and use EIGHT pieces of velcro about two inches long on the frame around the skylight and on the foil cover. Up and down in no time and pretty cheap also, we use it mainly for keeping the light out. I guess with the reflective foil it does help keep heat out, but we take it down in the mornings and put it up in the evening. While it doesn't stop ALL the light, it stops enough for us......It measures 23 1/2 X 16 inches..

they make a shade or insulation pad for the door window .this is close to the skylight size .we used the one they make for the door and velcroed it to the skylight .we take down to shower and put it back at night.

I dropped the skylite and put aluminum foil on the bottom of the top bubble and on the top of the dropped cover. Then I filled the inside with fiberglass insulation between the foil and reinstalled the cover. RV much cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Foil reflects the heat very well.
