As a former member of the 28th wing, ellsworth AFB. The B-36 was big. As was the B-52 that replaced the B-36s. The 28 wing was split up and one sq was designated the 4128 strat wing went to Amarillo, Tx. Other strat wings were established in Texas also. It was part of President Johnson's effort to expand the bases/civil runways in Texas (using military funds). In Amarillo, the civil airport runway was extended to accomidate the 18 B-52s. The only accident that I can recall was a civilian cesna accidently taxied behind a B-52 when the pilot throttled up to take off. The cesna was blown thru a chain link fence, accross US-66, and up against a raised RR track.
