AC Freeze sensor

2014 Dometic 15000 AC freezes up intermittently. Tech says need to buy new whole unit, some folks say could be bad freeze sensor. Have you replaced a sensor and had success in stopping freezing?

Are you running the fan in Auto or On, if Auto try it with the fan On so it runs all the time and see if that helps.

I learned long ago on our old Montana to run the A/C on HIGH rather than Auto and the unit will not freeze up. I think that Tech is just trying to make some extra money. Have you gone up on the roof and flushed out the veins on the A/C? They can get filled with dust and dirt and other stuff from trees and not work as they are designed.

Check for air leaks with the roof cover off. A small air leak could ice up coils also. Heard painting the cover white makes the unit 20% more efficient.

The part about painting the covers white, that is not the first time I have heard of that, why oh why would they ever make something black on the top of an RV , that does not make any sense at all! Now don't tell me for astetics!

If it was up for bid that way and it was the cheapest bid that is what gets put on the units. Apparently the engineers or the folks that put out the bids did not check that to closely. One can always replace the covers with a white one IF you have the money to do so and the correct cover to replace the black one. I know, I paid big bucks for this and expect it to be perfect BUT it doesn't happen that way folks. A lot of folks don't even look up on the roof when buying a new or even a used unit. They look at the sides and insides and not the topping.

Changing the shroud cover color does nothing.

The color of the AC cover doesn't really matter that much. Under that cover is the real insulation.

We have never had an A/C freeze up on us and never run the fan on high. I would check that the freeze sensor is installed in the evaporator core, and is also plugged into the control box. It's also possible for a freeze sensor to fail, which I had happen on the truck A/C. The photo is of the freeze sensor where it's installed on our front 13.5 Dometic A/C.

Before spending any money on anything or attempting a repair of any kind, take some time and watch of couple of these YouTube videos. They all pretty much cover the same material, so pick your choice: Click here. I'm all for trying the least evasive thing first, and if that doesn't work, escalate one step at a time.
