Diesel fuel additive

I’ve got a 2011 F350 Superduty Srw with 60,000 miles. Looking to start using a diesel additive, (never used before). Any recommendations. Are they worth the money? Looking for input. Neg or pos. Thanks

Rick,

Why do you believe an additive would be a good thing to add?

Been full timing for 11 years now and put over 150,000 miles towing in all weather and temperatures on two Dodge trucks. Never used an additive and don't expect to in the future.

This is about the only one I've used. They also make and anti-gel for the cold weather. It's readily available most anywhere.

On recommendation from my mechanic, I use Howes. I put 180,000 on my last truck and have 35,000 on my current with no issues. I use it in every tank during the winter and every other tank the remainder of the year.

I use Opti-Lube XPD in every tank, my personal choice.

I use DIESEL KLEEN because I have a 2013 Chevy Duramax engine and for a few years, Chevy used a less than spectacular fuel pump that tends to fail. The pump fails because there isn't enough lube qualities in the low sulfur diesel fuel. Ford also used some of the same type fuel pumps back then. A friend of mine had a 2010 Ford 250 and the fuel pump failed, it was going to cost him more to repair than the truck was worth.

Fuel additive is like best oil, tires, batteries. LOL
Everyone has a different idea. I have a 15 and I use a additive when I tow. I was using Motorcraft cetaine booster. Then I went to Hot Shots diesel additive. If you want to add something to your truck read the label and stay away from anything that has alcohol in it. There are a couple reasons to add something to the fuel. One is to lubricate the fuel pump. On the 11 the fuel pump would love some extra lubrication.

The other reason is in winter to keep the fuel from gelling.

I have been all over the country and have purchased fuel from lots of different stations and that is why I add something when I tow. other wise I just add something every other tank. I never run my truck below 1/2 tank.

I have read a bunch of stuff about most of these fuel pumps being made for diesel produced in Europe where their diesel is lubricated a little more, thus it would be a good idea to use an additive in a modern diesel engine in the U.S. Don't know if this is accurate info or not. I have always used Diesel Kleen when towing and never had fuel issues in either my 2012 F350 or my current TV. Pretty cheap insurance and I tend to believe I get about 1/2 a gallon better mpg.

I use both Archoil oil and fuel additives.

I actually use two types of Diesel additive...... Diesel Kleen & Bio Kleen. The Diesel Kleen is for all the previous mentioned reasons, but the Bio Kleen is to prevent bacteria and fungi from growing in the diesel. Yeah....it's a real thing.

We run a Volvo 730 tow vehicle and usually stay 3-4 winter months in an RV resort on the southern coast. Therefore, the truck occasionally sits idle for 2 months at a time. (We have a Smart Car as a "run around" vehicle.) The truck can hold up to 220 gals of diesel at a time. An idle truck and the warm/moist weather conditions could increase the potential of bacteria in the diesel. Definitely not a condition I want to deal with.

I've actually seen diesel fuel filters plugged with bacteria. Like slimy jello.

My feelings also. I have owned Ram and Ford 6.7 diesels plus logged 3 million miles plus in assorted big rigs with never using diesel additives EXCEPT on the big rigs when running the north in winter and that was only for the anti-gel feature. Your $ though.

I owned a 2005 Ford F-250 SWR with the 6.0L Diesel engine for ten years. During that time I had 4 turbo system failures. All covered under the Ford extended warranty plan. After the 4th rebuild, the Ford service manager suggested I use a cetane booster such as Diesel Kleen. He said the poor diesel fuel we get here in California doesn’t burn well in Diesel engines and soots up the turbos. I started using it and never had an issue again. I’m also adding 8 oz to every tank fill up on my 2015 Ford SD. My 2 cents on fuel additives.

Don

I have used diesel kleen on all four of our diesel trucks. Most of the fellow RVers I have talked to who run Fords do as well.

I doubt there is much difference in almost any of these additives but with these high pressure pumps running up to 35,000 PSI that pump needs all the lubricant it can get. And a cetane booster is also a plus. A new set of injectors runs $8000 maybe more. It might pay big dividends to protect them.
