Holy hail!!

Camping at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores Alabama and had a line of strong severe storms roll through last night. It was forecasted and we prepared ourselves for strong straight line winds figuring that was going to be the worst of it. Boy were we wrong... baseball sized hail that lasted about five minutes. Anything plastic on the roof was demolished, both skylights destroyed so water coming in. Patched the best I could from the inside while it was still raining heavily then got up on the roof when it settled down to survey the dam age. OUCH not to mention hail damage to the truck. Good news no one was hurt and everything can be fixed, insurance claims already submitted. Almost every camper here has some type of damage with some being way worse than ours. All part of the full timing adventure and being at the mercy of the
weather.

That time of year. Again. Gotta be a bit scary in the trailer. Haven’t experienced that, but had it break both our skylights at home and hail stones bouncing on the kitchen and bathroom floors. Also two dining room windows and one bedroom window.

We’ve been lucky. There were bad storms just to the south of us but we didn’t even get any rain. People here though as recently as 2 years ago we couldn’t get a tornado. They thought the mountains would protect us. That has been proven wrong. We have had several tornadoes within 50 miles of us in the last few years.

A long time ago there was a bad storm in Dubuque, Iowa. I had left the year before so missed it. My office was in an 8 story building. Every window on the north side of the building was knocked out. Also there was a nunnery(?) for retired nuns and one of them was trying to run from one building to another, and was struck and killed by hail.
Fortunately my experience with hail have been mostly marble size or smaller. Well..., once in Denver a little bigger and it knocked a 3 inch hole in the bathroom vent cover.

We are camped outside of Robertsdale AL, the local news showed numerous cars parked in Orange Beach that had the windows broken out from that hail storm. Hope everything works out good for your repairs. Two years ago while out in the black hills we got caught in a large hail storm that did $18,000 in damage to a new vehicle we had, so we feel your pain.

That same front passed thru southeast Georgia last night and brought tornado warnings with it. We were fortunate to only get high wing and heavy rain, same as you were expecting. We stayed at Gulf Shores SP last year in April. Great park and we were lucky to have beautiful weather. Very sorry you had to go thru that.

Gulf Shores is one of our favorite destinations, just not this time of year. We tried to get a Rez in the state park here two weeks ago for mid May and they are full.

SD, make sure you include possible decking damage in your insurance claim. We had similar storm a few years ago in Cheyenne, WY. Roof looked good except for vent covers, lights, etc. After the dealer inspected, all slides and main roof needed redecking and new membrane. Slides seem to be the biggest issue, all inside trim needs to come off to install new membranes which wrap inside. $11,000 later, all good to go, with a new 1/8 decking over the top of the old "holy" one, new membrane, and new seals around all roof penetrations.

That's terrible! You did an outstanding job patching up the damage. Hopefully your insurance is take some of the sting out.

I'll stick with my northern Nevada weather.

We were full timing in Dallas back in the early 90's and our Prowler got damaged by hail. It was scary as it sure was loud. Just the roof and three sides of the trailer got damaged where it looked like somebody went wild with a ball peen hammer. Insurance company wrote out a check to two parties so they required it to be repaired. For us we couldn't get it repaired as we were full timing and couldn't afford to live in a hotel for 30 days or more to have the trailer re-skinned. The roof solution was easier as they paid for a coating onlyou so I did it myself but out of my pocket. Somebody told us the insurance only pays for three sides as a storm can't damage all 4 sides.

Boy we made the right decision - we were coming back from Fla and had reservations just outside mobile, then scheduled to head Northeast from there - saw the weather forecast and turned East on Rte 10 then North on I95. Sorry for you damage, but think we will not schedule trips to Ala, Ok and the like in April & May.

Well, count your blessings! Just imagine what would have happened if you would have had solar panels lined all over the top of your camper and that same hail hit!

We had hail beat out 2 exhaulst vent covers on the roof of one of our previous travel trailers. The hail even broke the fan blades off the one in the bathroom. We got everything replaced, and then had covers installed. I figured it was better to have vent covers pulverized by hail (if it ever happened again), than to have the actual vent covers destroyed and water rushing in again. So, ever since, every camper we've had, at delivery, I have the dealership install the vent covers. It's a small price to pay for a second layer of protection on the roof.

We were in Gulf State Park also. Truck is totaled. Like you said, all plastic destroyed. Both A/c shrouds. Went thru rear shroud and busted fan blade. All slide toppers destroyed. No injuries. Thank God.
