2019 Heat Pump froze up

We camped over Thanksgiving weekend and with temps dipping into the 40's, we ran the heat pump each night. On Friday night, I woke up around 2:00 am and the system was blowing ice cold air as if the ac was on. I turned it off for the night and ran the furnace to warm things up. The following morning I saw a lot of water had ran off the roof and decided that the heat pump had frozen up and then thawed out after I turned it off. The following day and night we ran the heat pump again and all has worked flawlessly. Any idea what happened on Friday?

Based on what's happened to us in the past, it may have gotten colder than you thought it was and the compressor shut off, but the fan stayed on. If that was the case than the water you saw coming off the roof could have been frost melting in the sun.

The heat pump is taking heat out of the air so the air it exhaust is colder than the out side temperature so it will freeze up.

It has been our experience, temps below 47* the heat pump does not work and we turn on the fire place or furnace.
