WIFI Thermostat
So I get an advertisement from my oil company saying they now install WIFI thermostats for your heater/AC units in the house. They are the Honeywell Prestige thermostat. I thought, what a neat idea. So I went online and found them for $250. I called my oil company and after talking to them for a while, I asked how much, $600.00. I have a 2 story house with 2 zones, thought this price was fair, $250 each, with $50.00 each for installation fee.
So after a recap of our conversation, and I said $600 for 2 units installed, she said NO, THAT FOR 1....
WOW, WHAT A RIPOFF!!!!
Anyone have a WIFI thermostat?
What kind and are you happy with it?
OZZ, any comments????
THANKS, Tom

Tom,
We have the one, but only paid $125.00 for it from Amazon. Cell phone app, lets us control it from anywhere. It will also tell you what the current temp is at the thermostat. Hooked up myself. You need Internet access to you home, and a Wifi router.

I think Lowe's and Home Depot also sell same thing from 3M.

My wife probably won't let me have one. She knows I would be 1000 miles away and be playing with it turning the temp up and down at the house. She knows I could not just set it and leave it alone .......
But yeah, I'm gonna check this out lol lol

Ouch!
Well, it is normal for a 100% M.U. in HVAC Parts, I don't, my mark-up is half that as a rule, maybe that's why I'm not a rich guy...
Might be more to it that I can see from here, some sort of program built into the price of thermostat and install. I would think around a $70.00 install fee, but if they have a contract with an installer, $45-50 would be normal in my part of the country. (Volume work, customer welfare and all that)
I'll read up on it.
Ozz

What draws you to this thermostat? It is incredibly complex, both the programming, operation and if it goes Tango Uniform, the warranty can only be serviced by the installing contractor, not the homeowner.
It seems like overkill, but I have not seen your system, or systems. 90% of the people I have witnessed have the program on 'Hold' anyway.. Then the husband and wife fight over the programming and settings ;0

I recently got an e-mail discussing this product and thought for a minute. "Wow! Would I love to have one of those!" But I would use the features of one of these maybe four times a year. It's a lot cheaper to give a house key to my next-door neighbor and call her to go into the house and set the thermostat the day before I get home from a trip.

Tom,
Are you talking about a thermostat that you can control via a computer? If so our electric company installs them for us and we got $25 credit. I've used it a couple of times. It's nice but I certainly would not pay anything to have it done. If it is something else then I'm not familiar with it. Good luck, Dennis.

OZZ, nothing really draws me to this unit, its the one my oil company is pushing.
Can you suggest another unit?
I have an oil burner boiler with 2 zones, with domestic hot water, 2 central AC units, hence the 2 Tstats needed.
Pat, I have to agree, spending that much for a limited usage, is a no brainer, but it does seem neat. Oh, and lucky you to have a neighbor you trust enough to have them come into your house.
Hamrad, yes, the Tstat connects to your home wireless and you can control it via a computer, or smart phone. I'll have to check with our electric Co, I know they do offer setback Tstats, but I don't remember a WIFI one.
