Need advice on a ford
Looking to buy a 2008 F350 with the 6.4 diesel and 32k miles. Looked on the internet and only found people who had problems. So i'm asking those I trust. If you have one do you like it. And would you recommend it. Thanks for any advice.

We have a 2008 6.4L,CC,LB, dually. It has 48K miles on it 90% plus of that pulling a heavy 06 3400 and now a heavy 13 3402 Big Sky.It has been all over the country and pulled some of the steepest grades. We have not had a single problem with it. It is a very strong truck. We can count on 10MPG at the end of a average day towing. I would say the average is 9 to 11 depending on the environment. This truck weighs in at 9K plus.. full fuel and ready to tow.Last weigh in at the fall rally was 9215lbs.. These are very heavy trucks. One usually finds only problems on Internet forums.
I won't recommend you purchase the truck as we have no idea about that particular truck but can offer our TRUE experience.
Remember the other two brands are much lighter contributing to better MPG and will still do the job.

I have a 2008 F 250 with the 6.4 diesel, I have had zero issues with my truck, I bought mine used with 36K miles, clean oasis report. I use mine as a daily driver as well as pulling our fifth wheel camper. I agree that you usaully only find people with problems on the forums.

Like Rich I haven't had any problems with mine, great tuck. A Friend has one with 230,000 on it runs like a top. The 6.4 is a good engine with a great transmission. My 250 King Ranch weighs 8300 pounds. I get 10.3 MPG pulling in the western Va mountains at 70 MPH on I-81. My brother has a 2006 Chevy DA he gets about the same mileage I get pulling my camper. As far as problems they ALL have problems. People post problems on the Internet. Most people don't post how wonderful their trucks are. I like Rich won't say buy it but if I were you looking for a truck and this was a well maintained one I would wright a check and drive it home.

I had a 2009 F350 King Ranch with the 6.4L and had nothing but problems with it. The darn thing would regenerate every 45 miles or so. Power was so minimal that the truck had a hard time getting itself out of its own way. I loved the King Ranch package and received many compliments on the look of that truck, but having left me stranded 4 times on the highway, I said enough was enough. It seems with the 6.4L you either get a good one or in my case, a lemon.

I don’t like to give advice as to what someone should buy. Even with a new one you can have problems. Although ours is the 6.0 and it has a bad rap; when I bought it, it had over 300k miles on it and I was told by a mechanic (not a ford mechanic) that if I bought it I should plan on taking out a loan for about 20 to 30k$.
I’ve had to spend a little money on it but overall I have no regrets. When work needs to be done it goes to a Ford dealership. I believe that has paid for itself rather than trying to save a few bucks taking it somewhere else. We just got back from a trip where I placed a few hundred miles on it without a problem. It might break down tomorrow but it has served us well.

We had a 2002 with the 7.3, a 2005 with the 6.0 and now a 2011 with the 6.7. That reflects my confidence in Ford superdutys, I did not have a 6.4. You might want to go to Dieselstopforum, and do a search for 6.4 engines. You will see lots of both sides. I see plenty of 6.4s in the campgrounds.

We have a 2008, very nice truck. I would say go for it, spend the money and take it to the Ford dealership and have the Diesel mechanic go over it before buying.
We love ours, it was a comfort having a reliable truck on the year-long trip over the mountains ythat we took.
(Also all the BLM land trails we took it on for 3 month's in Arizona, the Jeep owners were surprised the truck made it over some of those trails.) Rugged. Well built truck.

Ask the dealer to see the service record for the truck and ask to speak to the former owner if possible. If it hasn't problems so far, you're probably safe.
Just remember, the internet collects complaints like crap collect flies. People complain when they have a problem but remain silent when they don't. For every complaint you read about, there may be 100 (or 10,000) who have had no issues. Plus one person may complain on multiple boards, which can distort things.

We have a 2008 F-350 King Ranch dually we bought new and now has almost 30,000 mi. When it was two years old, the heater core gave up and last year the radiator started leaking. The radiator was cover by Ford's 100,000 mi drive line warranty. Overall the truck has been great, comfortable ride, and plenty of power for pulling a Montana. As suggested by others, get the service history of the truck from a Ford dealer.

we have a 2009 F250 and have had zero problems. with the research i have done, my suggestion would be that if has been tuned or performance modified in any way, DO NOT BUY IT
I have also discovered that most of the complaints are by folks who buy these trucks as toys and abuse them,
then they also complain because a dealer will not repair on warranty
these are serious machines that do best when worked---regens get close together in city driving
filters, filters, filters, coolant systems and lubrication are the key to reliability with these trucks.
do not run extended oil drain intervals on any truck with diesel injection on exhaust stroke for diesel particulate filter cleaning; there is fuel dilution in the crankcase oil that can be an issue if it is excessive

Having had 2 Ford F250's, a 2005 with the 6L diesel and a 2006 with the 6.8L V10 and now with a 6.7L Dodge RAM with the Cummins and the 6 speed with engine brake, I can without reservation suggest you compare the 2007/2008 RAM. I've never been a "Dodge guy" and have never owned one prior to now and IMHO the RAM is a better workhorse.

The 6.0 PSD and the gas Super Duty are not the 6.4
also when comparing across the brands make sure that the comparisons are for same CAFE status.
From 2007 forward the emissions standards tightened and combinations of EGR/coolers, exhaust catalysts, particulate filters and DEF injection were incorporated.
a lot of the feedback on these models is related to some difficulties related to these changes.

here is an example of some difficulties related to the emissions standards changes. this one a 2007 CI6
the 2008 PSD you are inquiring about had similar complaints

I am now on my 4th diesel Super Duty. I have had a 2000, 03, 06 and now 08. I have purchased them all used and had great luck with all of them. I very much agree with what has already been mentioned that finding out what you can about the trucks history is key. Best of luck with your decision. -Glenn

We have a very early (June, 2007)2008 F-350, 6.4 diesel, 4X4, single rear wheel, 29,000 miles. We love the truck. It hauls my 3150RL with no issues. I did just have to have the rear calipers and rotors replaced as one had a piston lock up and grind the rotor down. My 1999 7.3 got better milage but didn't pull as well. So far so good.

My truck has been perform ace tuned. It has 611 HP and that is a best math estimate. You can bet it has not been abused in any way. I would say if it has been tuned KNOW THE TRUCK. Tuning it in it's self does not hurt the truck and can make a more reliable truck.
