but I am sold on the Glocks.
I think I will pass on Organ Pipe, having an escort is not my way of enjoying a National Park. A shame.
I bet there is a trail of trash like we saw up on Eagle Eye there.
Drugs have impacted many here in the S. W., as in many other places in the states.

Interesting link. In 2010 we visited the Visitor Center in the Park. It is very interesting area & "Gorgeous" Sagueros! You learn much about the Desert & how growth functions there. I would encourage anyone to visit The Center & then make a choice of whether to add anything additional.
They do have a fabulous RV park w/electric & water & a dump. It is landscaped sites with pads and all.
I also read where Rich (PapaBeav) was hiking in the Park & had some kind of issue. BUT, the Visitor Center is quite a learning experience & can be enough.
I am "not" saying throw caution to the wind, and I am"not" saying we went "protection-less" either . But, we hardly go anywhere "protection-less".

We were there in fall 2009. Most of the park was closed to visitors. Interesting place but not again.

The DW and I spent a week at Organ Pipe First week of Feb this year. No problems for us. Great RV park(no hookups). I'd go back in a heartbeat. We even went on a 4 mile hike on one of the trails (just the two of us and the trail was about 15 miles from the campground in Ajo Mountain). They have a great visitor center and very knowledgeable rangers and volunteers there. We plan on going back next year in the May/June time frame when all the cactus are in bloom. We may apply for a guest hosting assignment for a few months.

We stayed a couple of nights there at the end of Jan. of this year, we had just come up from Puerto Penasco, Mexico. Beautiful area, great campground and activities. Had Ken Hires, the ranger mentioned in the article give a talk on the night sky in the parks amphitheater. It is definitely on my list to return to for a future visit.

We were just there last month. While there and on a hike to the mine behind the campground I turned in 3 potential drug smugglers which were later caught. I showed the article to Kathy and she told me we were never going there again.

Not my kind of place to visit. To many places in this beautiful country to visit without needing the Governor, or the Judge. Now not to say they aren't needed because protection is always needed. That Judge is one fine piece to say the least. Looked at that very hard in my selection. Still looking and now must add in the Governor!!

Organ Pipe is a great place to visit. We were so lucky on our first visit there to see the desert come alive with color. It had been a very vet winter and a nice warm spring. It was gorgeous. The second time we were not as lucky but it was still very nice. The last time was also just a so-so type visit. Not a lot of flowers but still very nice. We only drove in the areas where autos were allowed. We did not take any of the walking trails except the ones right at the CG and Visitor Center. Never saw even a hint of any possible trouble or danger. We will definitely go back for another visit one of these days.
Unless they have changed the CG in some major way there were no hookups. Nice concrete pads but no sewer or water or electric. I believe the volunteers and workers get site with all those things but not the regular CG. You can run your generator but they have very restricted hours. There is a good dump site as well as a place to fill up with water. Excellent water too!
As to whether a "Judge" or a "Governor" would be something to brandish at a drug "mule" whose choice of weapon is an AK 47...... Well I don't know all that much about weapons but it would seem to me that in any type confrontation I'd keep my "Judge" and or "Governor" very quiet! I would not want them to start boasting about "anything". But that's just me.... perhaps your "Judge" and or "Governor" can out shoot an AK 47. Just my uninformed opinion.

I am not advocating walking up to a group of bad*ss-looking men in the Arizona desert, "brandishing" a handgun, and yelling, "Ola, dirtbags! You runnin' drugs?"
Carrying a weapon on the road doesn't make me feel safer; it just increases my chances should the day go to hell in a hurry. You keep a low profile and don't expose yourself to potentially bad situations (or people).
And I am not trying to make this into a gun thread, either; I just don't want anyone to kick me out of the campfire because they think I may "go off" with a couple of six-shooters.
What I will say is that I am just as cautious about my surroundings at Cloudland Canyon down the road from here as I would be in the wild country. To me, it just makes good sense. If I ever hear my RV door being kicked in in the middle of the night, I just want more protection than three Doxies. No matter how cute the little boogers are...
