weights

I know this has come up before but i am confused. I was wondering how do you come up with your vechile cvwr. I read the forum and it got me thinking. I know what my gvwr is because it is on the compliance sticker on door post. I think it is the gvwr plus the max. tow weight but not sure. My gvwr is 8800 and my tow rating is 13,500 would that mean my cvwr is 22,300?

Sorry, that's not how it works. The GCWR will be less than that. Since I don't have a Ford I don't know just what your GCWR is but I'm sure someone on the forum will be able to tell you.

Darrell & Pam,
I can only use my truck as an example since I am not up to date on the Ford. The CGVWR of my truck is 22,000 lbs and the GVWR of my truck is 9,200 lbs. The last time I ran across the scales I had 9,193 lbs on the truck axles and 11,9.. lbs on the coach axles. When added together I have a CGVWR of 21,... lbs, thus making me within the weight limits of the truck. When talking about fifth wheels it changes everything as you will be carrying somewhere along the lines of 1,900-3,000 lbs of kingpin weight on the rear axle of the truck. You have to take all these numbers into effect when trying to figure you GVWR & CGVWR. Now if I use the boat and trailer all things change. Boat trailers do not have near the tongue weight, thus allowing you to tow "more" weight. The tongue weight on my boat trailer is 1,200 lbs, add that to the "normally loaded" truck it gives me a weight of approx. 7,150 lbs on the truck axles. The max tow rating for my truck is 15,000 lbs. If I take 22,000 - 7,150 lbs I have a towing capacity of 14,850 lbs to stay within the limits of my truck. The more weight you have on the truck the less you can tow. Hope this makes sense and does not confuse you even more.

I know my GVWR but were do you get the CGVWR# for the vechile? Is it a factory set spec. or is it the no. that you add togather as you stated? How do you know if you are over your CGVWR?

pud2,
Your CGVWR is set by the factory. You might want to try and call Ford, have your VIN ready and see if customer service can look up your truck and give you the numbers you are looking for. Just a thought...

My 2000 F350 had a gross combined weight rating of 20000 pounds and I believe your 99 will be the same. The newer Ford Superduties F250 and F350 s with the PSDs are now 23000 pounds GCWR.

Most 3/4 ton trucks will be over their GVWR way before they are over thier combined rating simply because large Fivers like the Montana put so much weight on the pin. My little 2955RL still puts 2600 pounds on the pin and because my truck is so heavy, my GVW is at 11080 when I am loaded up with everything including me, my wife and my Shnauzer and Doberman. My truck has an 11200 pound GVWR so I am fine. You have to put these things over a scale to realize how heavy they can get.

Many units on the road are over their GVWR or their GVCR. Some people like myself feel it is very important to stay within your weight limits. Some people are over a 1000 pounds overweight and are not concerned. What can I say? Good luck and safe travels.

If you are ever in OR, the State leaves the scale on when the station is closed and you can weigh you rig and 5W. I weight the truck on one day and then the whole rig, axle by axle, on another day.

As Wrenchtraveller suggested, your '99 F250 is most likely over GVWR with a 3670. The brochure says the empty pin weight is 2300, by the time you make that a realistic PW, add passengers, cargo, tools, the weight of the hitch, you are probably at least 3000. During my search for a new tv, I looked at a 2006 F250 PSD with the largest GVWR available (10,000)...due to the heavy weight of the PSD and the truck, the max cargo capability was only 2,507.

I ordered a dually last month!

Here is another ironic fact. Slide in campers all have the same appliances as trailers and when I had my 04 F350 SRW with my 04 Okanagon 9 foot camper I was over 1000 pounds over my GVWR beause in 04 the F350 SRW only has a 9900 GVWR. With that same camper , I had to pack lightly to stay under my 05 F350 SRW's 11200 GVWR.
Keep in mind that the 9 foot Okanagan is one of the lightest models . They now have 11 foot models with slides and more cupboards than cheap 5th wheels. These will over load a truck like mine by over a ton and yet people will toodle around in these things without a care.
Ignorance is bliss!
Now for the ironic part, to get these things on a dually, you need swing out brackets on your front jacks to allow the dually to get under the camper. These swing out brackets weaken the jacks and are failing on occasion and could cause tragic results. So yes, you need the dually to carry a big slide in camper, just don't kill yourself putting it on the truck.
