Brake controller
I have a Hayes Engage electric brake controller. The problem with it is it is showing "SC" code for short circuit. It shows this code continually, trailer plugged in or not, brakes applies or not. the manual says that it should only show this code when the brakes are applied and there a short in the system.
I have this fear that the controller is shot, but I am hoping some one can tell me different. We have been stationary since May and I don't want to break camp to check the brakes. But, we will be on the road in 2 weeks, and I need to get it fixed.

Jim, Just a thought, cut/disconnect the blue wire at the back of the brake controller and see if the problem goes away. It it does, the issue is with the truck wiring, if not the controller has died.

I know it is the truck or controller since it flashes without the trailer connected. What has me baffled is that is flashes when the brakes are not applied and this is what would make the blue wire hot. So, if we carry this out to a conclusion, the controller is shot.

Jim, You are probably correct, however if you disconnect the blue wire and the problem goes away the truck is the issue. But, you probably realize the controller is the issue since it does it all the time.
That said, is the input wire to the controller hot all the time, IE: controller thinks the brakes are applied?

Yes, the input wire is hot all the time, even with the key off. But, that is the way it should be. The controller senses when the brakes are applied and activates the blue wire.
It is a 4 wire setup
white--input
blue--trailer brakes
red ==lights
black ground
EDIT
Now you have me wondering. Which wire does the controller sense the brakes are applied? I just hate to throw parts at a problem and hope for a cure.

Jim.
You have two that are hot and ground. Hot may be switched.
Input, is from brake switch and is hot only when pedal is depressed and brake lights are on.
Output, blue wire is result of input from brake switch.

According to this, http://hayesbc.com/wp-content/upload...051221-CAB.pdf, your controller may be wired incorrectly. White should be input from your stop lamp switch, hot only when the pedal is depressed, which tells the controller to apply power to the blue wire and power to your trailer brakes. Check to make sure there is no power on the white wire with no brake applied and no power to the blue at the same time. jlb27537 has it correct, the only wire that should be powered at all times is the black wire connected to battery power.

I think the controller is bad. I jumpered hot and ground only to it--no other wires connected and still got the "SC" code.

Heck guys, you can just solve this easy by buying a new truck. Controller or truck issue is reason enough to get a new one. Don't you like my thinking? John
