Laptop Mounting

Has anyone found a good mounting for a laptop in the truck? I am looking for something that would mount easily in the truck and allow it to be swiveled between pilot and copilot that won't interfere with general operation of the vehicle. Someone probably makes a nice mount that bolts onto the front somewhere, but I'm sure someone has already done the research. By the way, we have a widescreen laptop, so it will take up a fair amount of space.

Ron and Terrie, we just have a board that straps to the console lid. It is long enough to project beyond the console. I have it covered with velcro. The laptop has velcro on most of its bottom side, wherever it doesn't interfere with anything else. It stays put very nicely but doesn't swivel. I saw one person who went to Home Depot and bought a small lazy susan turntable and screwed it down to two pieces of board. You'd need to come up with something to keep it from swiveling when you turn a corner but it might be a place to start from.

There's an online site that sells mounts that bolt to the floorboard. They have swivel models as I recall. They're not very pretty and are very pricey but if cost is not an obstacle it might be worth checking into. Someone on MOC mentioned the name of the company in a post a few months ago. Sorry I can't remember it.

the people at DeLorme sell laptop mounts for cars and trucks. But, like Steve said, they are a little pricey.

The center armrest on a Dodge is big enough to put the 'puter on top. When you're through with the 'puter you can put it inside the rest. At least my Compaq Presario will fit inside.

I have an 03 Dodge and the center armrest is big enough for the PC but I went to an Ikea Store and bought a small plastic step stool. It fits nicely on the floor in front of the front seat between the dash and is high enough to put the laptop at easy reading level. The PC sits pretty well without moving around but I may add velcro in the future. I wanted the PC a little farther forward than putting it on the armrest would allow. If I remember right it cost me about $7.00.

Steve, your mount sure sounds good. I built me a PVC mount and it works good, but I just don't like it. Your set up seems to be a lot better.

As for as swiveling. What do you think of this suggestion? how about another piece of wood at the end of your board that is raised up about an 1/2 inch or less using a bolt and nuts for the swiveling. Or you could use a lazy susan mount for the swivel. I used a lazy susan mount in my old trailer and mounted it under a board to swivel our Television.

I am going to use you idea for my lap top. Thanks for sharing your idea.

I have the Jotto Desk, it bolts to the floor and swivels anywhere you want it, a little pricey at $149 plus another $60 for an additional brace but it works great with little vibration.

That is exactly what I was looking for. I just need to talk Terrie into it now. Looks like you can take the stand out and stow it behind the rear seat when not using it. I think that's just the ticket at a reasonable price.

Floridanomads, if you can do that and have it stable so it doesn't rock with each movement of the vehicle then it should work. I would think if it were a small washer so there's no real room for it to rock it would work. I don't need to swivel mine but may still give some thought to doing that.

The board on mine is long enough to extend beyond the console, allowing me to mount the laptop close to the dash, making it easier to see. We have pull-out cupholders coming out of the dash so I have the laptop just clearing those.

One nice thing about the swivel, it would allow you to change the angle a little for those times the sun is directly hitting the screen. I just angle the screen back or forward a little but being able to swivel might be better. Good idea. When not in use, this board rides between console and seat although when we're on the road frequently I just leave it strapped to the console lid and use it to lift the lid as needed.
