Auto start generator?

I was at a camp site and we lost power, at the same time the guy next to me generator kicked on. I asked him about it and he said he set it up to start the generator on power loss. Said it's only purpose is to keep the batteries charged to keep the 3k inverter running (refrigerator and air) then shuts off until they need charging again. He figures with his solar and bank of LiFe batteries he could run unattended for many weeks, longer if he could figure out how to auto swap the tanks, says he is working on that.

Has anyone done an auto start of the generator on power loss, if so how. Good or bad idea?

Generator auto-start devices are common. There are DIY as well as manufactured options. Magnum makes a networked and standalone version of their AGS. Atkinson also makes several modules commonly used by a lot of Victron users.

Hi All,

We have auto start on our generator for one simply reason. Its called DOG'S.... I want to make sure that my dog's have A/C or heat when we are not there. If I remember to shut the auto start off when we get home (Back to the trailer). When we are at the trailer I watch the panel to see how the battery's are holding up. Our new trailer has a pretty quiet generator. Runs off LPG.

Ironically our dog was also the original catalyst for our AGS as well. We originally started our genset on ambient temperature in support of running the ac. Now it’s solely for exercising and SOC.
