poor repair spring hangers

While travelling through St Louis and into Illinois, I had another spring hanger let go. Found this company called United Truck STL, located at 2222 Lincoln Ave in Granite City, Illinois and they came out. They spent all day, 8 hours, working on my spring hanger problem with equipment that was totally inadequate for the job. Also, charged me for the time it took them to go out and find additional wire to use on their child's welder, since they ran out. I found that unacceptable not to carry welding rods/wire with you, since you would most likely have to use it. After ripping me off for the job that cost me 700.00 they hurried off the scene. After driving 20 miles, that same hanger let go again. Also, since it started sprinkling rain for a very short period of time the charged a fee for "inclement" weather. I tried and tried to get them to answer their phone but they would not. They knew what a lousy job they had done and didn't want any more part it in. Here are pictures of the repair he attempted to do and charge 700.00. The last picture is of the finished repair I had done by a reputable repairman in this area. He fixed all eight of them and I couldn't be more pleased with the result. I am sending this notice for people who might be travelling through this area and have similar issues with hangers, since it is a common problem.

their job looks like they sprayed it with foam insulation to cover up they lack of ability to do the job correctly.
I have an old Lincoln electric welder left to me by my Dad and could have done a better job.

wow that was there weld job! I am a backyard welder and certainly can do better than that that weld is all porous, had no penetration whatsoever. I understand when s@#! happens you are at the mercy of whomever comes out to "help" at least nothing bad happened as in a accident and that thankfully you were able to get it fixed correctly. as for them ripping you off not sure what you can do to get some of your cash back, sorry to hear about your dealing with such a unreliable repair company, I will certainly keep an eye on mine, thanks for the "report"

I would hope you paid by credit card. If so I would dispute the charges.

On both of our new Montana's we took them as soon as possible to Morryde for IS and haven't had a suspension problem yet. These things are too heavy for low bidder suspensions.

There is a silver lining to this whole story. This was the third hanger I have had break in 14 months on a fairly new unit. A few months ago I contacted Lippert because a fellow forum mate suggested it. I gave Lippert all the details on how and when they all broke and asked them If they could give me some monetary relief. I reminded them also, that these broken welds caused me to ruin four tires and sent all the pics I had including welds, ruined tires, and paid receipts to the repairmen. Surprisingly, Lippert told me to send bank statements which showed I actually paid for all of this and they would review it. Within days they sent back an email and said they would pick up the complete tab for all the work, including the cost of new tires. At this point it's hard for me to bad mouth Lippert since they did come to my rescue, a little over 3000.00.

That is beyond a doubt the worst welding job I have ever seen. I don't know how anyone with even a smidgen of a conscience could charge for such inept work. That guy was beyond incompetent. Unbelievable!!

As jeffba said hopefully you paid by credit card. I can only wonder why you even paid them at all. After seeing the mess that they spent all day doing they should've been paying you for your lost time. Just out of curiosity what did the competent welder charge you and how long did it take him to do the job right?

I had no other choice but to pay him. If I would have just drove away he could have had me arrested for theft. The shop that did the final repair fixed all eight hangers, bead blasted them and painted them. Also, the hangers have gussets on both sides but can't be seen from that angle and only charged a little over 1000.00. A friend of a friend knew the shop owner. I am totally happy.

this is why you always pay with a credit card...if possible.

you can see why it many people carry an extra spring hanger.

Hi Jim. This is Paul. Don't know if you remember me and Carole.
Sorry to hear of all your troubles. It looks like dirt dobber welding to me. I don't see how the guy could sleep at night after sticking you with $700 for that terrible job. Looks like first class work the second time around.
Hope to run into you and Diana.

That is beyond words!! How far did he stand back when he through the wire. I would not have pad a dime for that work.

when a weld looks like bubble gum that's usually about how long it holds

Although you are totally happy, IMO I would have some X-factor brackets installed, They are the single most helpful thing you can do to help stabilize that suspension. I fabricated ,and installed my own, basically copied the MorRyde X-factor braces, but for the cost they are well worth it .
