Hello everyone. My wife and I just bought our first fiver, a Montana. We’ve been scouring the forums and are a bit overwhelmed with the number of problems people have with their units.

My question to you is in your experience, what spare parts should we take with us when we head out in April?

Thanks!

Chris and Cyn

I used to carry bins full of spare parts that collected dust most of the time. I found I could get just about any part I needed at a local rv dealer, on Amazon, often at Home Depot or Lowes. So instead I carry a complete set of tools, to include bubble Jacks, electric drill and Jigsaw, multimeter, air compressor, torque wrench etc . Only parts I carry are a collection of screws, nuts and bolts, duct tape and electrical wiring, eternabond tape for emergency roof repairs, automotive wiring and a spare control pad for the levelup system. I have always been able to get my hands on necessary parts when needed, and have never been stranded on the road because of a failure other than tire issues. Congrats on your new rig.

Welcome to the forum! You're making a common mistake about all the problems. When you look at the listing we have thousands of members and the forum is the best place to post problems and get answers. Most of the time we are enjoying our Montana's and have no need of answers to problems. That said, I carry a few plumbing parts (shark bites etc.), Eternabond tape to repair the roof if necessary and lap sealant to repair any old cracked sealant around vents etc. The rest, as 1Retired said, mostly sits unused.

Welcome to the forum. We are on our 3rd Montana and have been pleased with all 3. What you see on the forum is people that do have a problem and have questions how to fix them. What you see is all the people that don't have a problem.

Chris and Cyn,

Welcome to the forum!

I carry a few tools but no spare parts. Only issue I have had was picking up a screw in the sidewall of a tire for which I mounted the spare and then bought a new tire.

Forums are mainly for someone with issues and or problem solving. I`ve very seldom seen someone come here to post positive and complimenting threads. It IS refreshing when someone does tho. Don't worry about whats going to go wrong with your coach, life is too short to do that....go ENJOY IT!!! BTW Congrats on your new coach!!!

I’m convinced EVERY make of RV has SOME trouble. The handier you are the better off you will be. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best is my plan.
I have learned so much from reading threads in this forum, I am sure it has saved me many hundreds if not a thousand or two. My list is fairly short.
1) buy the best sewer hose you can find and an extension.
2) I have an in-line electric surge protector, some have installed on-board systems.
3)One of the tool sets from Costco plus a 1-1/16” socket for your water heater bung
4) a 50A extension cord and a full compliment of adapters
5) I truly LOVE my tire pressure monitor for the trailer.
6) a water pressure regulator, mine is adjustable but some parks have very high pressure and some have hardly any.
7) a sewer hose support, there are many to choose from.
8) a roll of ETERNABOND roof repair tape.
9) I personally carry a Dewalt 20V 1/2” impact wrench AND a torque wrench for the possible tire change.
10) a package of the 16” HEAVY zip ties.
I am sure I left out a bunch, but there’s plenty of shopping on this list.

First, welcome and enjoy the rig.

Mark A has a good list. Throw in an assortment of small batteries and some duct tape and you'll cover most small issues.

It is good to know the problems faced by many so you will be better prepared for issues on the road without tools and any clue what to do. The vast majority of forum discussion revolves around maintainance and repair for good reason. RVs are not like modern day cars. They are houses on wheels with all the systems and more than a home. Some are better than others. Knowledge will enhance the rv experience and this is a good place to get it.

Don't be scared. Our unit has been fine with only a couple of problems, but not with the build quality itself. The Thetford aqua flood failed and i should have listened and change it out sooner now have a dometic 320 and our Norcold needed and new cooling unit and that was on extended warranty.

2x on a good assortment of tools. Only spare parts not mentioned above is a set of wheel bearings and seal. Here's hoping that I never need them.

Thanks

Thanks, everyone, for the lists and encouragement. We pick up the trailer on April 9 and are planning to have a short trip (within easy distance of home). Here’s hoping that all of the snow melts before April! Thanks again! Chris and Cyn

I have fixed a few items. The one item that I have used the most is sealant for the cracks that form in the door frames and other places. Where the old sealant is. But most people have said, all brands have issues.

Enjoy
